Default HELP,,,,, I could cry,,,,,

As some of you may know, I was on here with a Cam Position code problem, and thought I heard a noise in the motor,, faint one, but not sure. Well, I pulled my cam cover, looked a couple months ago and the tensioner looked good,,, thought ok, new CPS and see what happens. Put it in, thought everything was fine, less than a hundred miles later I have a TERRIBLE noise from the motor, trailered it home, pulled the cover and this is what I found...
I showed the cam cover bolt to relate the size of those shavings!!!
Here is the outer cam chain and tensioner, still looks good,

all that come from the inner one probably? Which one fails most times?

Any help will be appreciated. Also has anyone else seen damage like that? What was it?

Is that the oil pump behind the cam chain? Someone I know told me they thought it was down there...

On edit and after looking at my CD manual,,,,, it is [sm=feedback.gif]

Any help and I would be FOREVER INDEBTED to ya,,, [sm=hail.gif]

What you have in your hand is the cam bearing cage.....look at the bearing and you will see that the ***** are not spaced out evenly any more .You have a bearing failure. The cams have to come out to replace the bearings and you better look in the oil pump for any damage from the bearing cage being sucked up in side. If there is any gouges or abnormal wear in the pump it will have to be replaced too. Look at your cam position sensor because this usually gets wiped out too. Nows the time to think about a good cam and gear drive.

Thanks for the quick reply Doc, If it had come to me having to guess, that was going to be my speculation too.

Best guess, parts wise, including the oil pump. What would I be looking at?

A guy here localy that I met on the CB,,of all places, (He mentioned he had a shop, works on bikes and does chromeing too) He told me he had a pair of cams, can't remember what number, but they are performance cams. For 150.00 iirc
What should a gear drive set cost, and I suppose that is the "Cats meow" for these? (Much better than chain?)
Exactly what are the advantages of a gear drive?

Thanks again!

I think I paid $380.00 for a pump if my memory serves me well (it's been a while since I needed one) Bearings are around $10.00 to $15.00 and about $12.00 for the inner can bearings.

The Gear drive will get rid of those pesky tensioner and they have less mechanical drag so there is a slight hp gain with them too. The gear drive HAS to be set up correctly or they will be noisy.

Be careful on what cams your guy has....it's always better to under cam than over cam an engine.

If you're in need of a TC oil pump, send me a PM. I removed my stock at 8000 +/- miles from a '06 Street Glide.

Thanks BP, I will keep that in mind... (They said it may or may not need one, (Sounds like it is more likely than not...

Question one of my friends at the Air Guard asked, could it have gotten throughout the motor? (Main and rod bearings, ect...?

My logic, and correct me if I am wrong, is since the Oil pump is down there, it must go through the filter after the pump, so the metal particals shouldn't have ventured out into the rest of the motor,,, RIGHT?

Thanks again for everyones help! I have a guy coming by the house this afternoon to take a gander at it.

You are correct...the TwinCam is the first Harley that directs the oil into th filter before entering it engine, however the oil does pass through the the cam plate to the filter so flush the plate out real good. Ther is a plug at the top in the middle of the plate that comes out for flushing.
Good luck

Doc,
One other quick question on the Cams, your reference to Undercaming / Overcaming, I assume you mean lift and duration? What numbers would you reccomend for a mild cam. (I am done hotrodding my bikes, had the Jap Crap for that before!) But more torque, and a couple more HP would never hurt, right?
When this guy gets back with me on his set of cams, and tells me they are such and such, what would be a good match for me?

I've used Head-Quarters HQ-0034's in a couple, "generally" stock 88"ers and had very nice results. One was a Heritage & the other a Fatboy.Heritagewas carb'd (used the HQ carb kit) & the FatBoy was EFI w/a PCIII.
