I guess it would be helpful to know what you are changing to. If you simply going to put slip ons on then you do one thing. If you are swapping complete exhausts and need to do the 02 things, then you do another thing. Either way, it is only a cuple of bolts.

ok,well...... I am taking off the 1 3/4" staggared straight pipes and putting on a set of big growl sharp shooters with shields. I'll probably be doing this next week but they are "gently used" big growl pipes so they come with no instructions.
What I need to know is if there is some tricks i need to know. such as getting to the old pipesoff (the nuts that connect them to the motor is a pretty cramped space), if it is easier toput the shields on last or first.do i need any kind of new gaskets..etc. just as many silly details i can get. i guess.

G'day TLAP

1st tip is to make sure you have the time to do it all in one effort. I recently staged my pipes, t-max and A/C over three or four days and it was a nightmare!!! But below are some things I discovered in the course of my install.

Make sure you retain the bolts and the flange from the original connection to the cylinder heads. you will need these to reattach new pipe (more than likely). The gaskets will probably need to be changed. My bike is only 1000kms old, so I reused mine, after removing them carefully.

use a felt tip pen on the outside of the heatshield to mark the location of the hose clam mounting clips for refernece when install hose clamps as the pipes cover the clips. The felt tip marker just whipes off when finished.

Put the pipes in the shields before attaching to your bike.

Go to the website of the pipe manufacturer and see if they have a pdf of the instructions. Most reputable manufacturers do. If there isn't one for your pipes, go to vanceandhines.comand track your model bike down, and you will at least get the instructions on dissasembling the factory pipes and get an idea of what is in front of you.

If you track a copy down, read the instructions from start to finish and understand them fully, making sure you have all the required tools and equipment necessary on hand - see my 1st tip!!!! A6inch extension for your ratchet is essential!!

Get a service manual for your model.

Get a few beers and entice a mate to come around and lend a hand! I would have loved an extra set of hands when doing mine!!

Enjoy it, after you've finished you will have a great sense of achievement, and a great sounding bike, and you can pass your tips on to the next thread you see asking for advice (and sound like you know what you're talking about).

My last tip is to let everyone who has helped you out know how you got on.

Ciao

T1

definately a few beers project. Did you have much trouble getting a socket onto the nuts? Maybe ill need a swivel extension. That looks like my biggest problem so far.
