Default Cam selection

All,

I have an 07 RK Classic, I am looking to help out on the heat managment by installing better cams with more overlap. Any suggestions. I dont want to do pistons, just cams. Im tired of the heat and glowing rear pipe and hope cams will help on detination.

The most important timing event that we look at is the intake closing, if you want to get more bottom end torque you look for a smaller number(which the 26 has). But when you look at the intake opening and the exhaust valveopening(which is the second most important timing event) there is not enough overlap (20 degrees) to cool the engine down so the 26 will tend to hold more heat in the engine. You want the exhaust valve opening to be 8-10-12 degrees differant (bigger in number) than the intake closing, if the engine is running real cool you could run the number all the way up to 6 difference. This is a snap shot timing event at .053" lift but it doesn't give you the rate of change (the ramps are all different). So much for laymans terms. So in a nut shell we look at the difference
1) intake closing- the smaller the number the earlier the torque comes on so the 26 will come on quicker than the 37 however when we look at the other timing events there isn't enough overlap to aid in cooling the engine down since the stock heads normally run hot 20 degrees is not in my opinion enough so I would go with the 37 because it has more overlap cycle that allows the engine more cooling time. If your riding in Alaska it doesn't make any difference but if your down south you need to cool your engine down. I just returned from R&R Cycle and they are a beta tester for Andrews cams and have on of the Andrews cam test machines and clearly understand the difference when they design the cams.
The 37 would be my perfered choice. I'll say it again that if there was a third choice the RR525 bolt in cam is an excellant choice. Broader torque band, just as smooth, and gives more horse and torque. You might want to give Reggie Sr a call at R&R and have him explain in more detail what I skimmed over here (603-645-1488). Hope this helps.

You took the words right out of my mouth. The next "cool" thing to do would be to get an R&R cam plate/ cam cover to go with the cams. This will quiet the gears down, stabilize the pinion shaft, and cool the engine down another 8-10 clicks. Hope this helps.

Default RE: Cam selection

I'd suggest either the new Andrews 54 or the R&R 525 both have very similar numbers , with the Andrews being higher lift . Both were developed for the new motor

RR525 || TW54 || SE 255
.525 lift || .555 lift || .550
20/38 intake || 19/39 intake ||
48/16 exhaust || 43/15 exhaust ||
238 intake duration || 238 intake duration || 211 intake duration
244 exhaust duration || 238 exhaust duration || 235 exhaust duration

The Andrews 54 cam power begins@ 2680 rpm and pulls hard to 4700 rpm depending on what exhaust system your running. A good 2 into 1 may increase the power band

The R&R 525 campower hits@ 2720 rpm and pulls hard to 4800 rpm, and again the pipe will effect the power band
