No, typically gear drive cams have an audible whine. How loud it is depends on gear lash (free play betwen the gears). The main reason Harley went to chain driven cams was to reduce noise.
I was looking at gear drives, I was concerned about any noise, but figured anyone that knew what it was, would be impressed rather than say, eww whats the matter? Kind of like the sound of a blower, or turbo on a car. If you know what it is who cares about the noise? I decided because I will be either trading or selling it in the next year, to save a few bucks and stay chain drive, get the 37 cams from Andrews, and put her back together that way. Less overall expense, and when I sell it next spring to get a Road Glide, or King, It will still sell nicely I think. (Should pep it up nice with that cam.) Looking forward to getting it back on the road this week,,, if all goes well, wish me luck!
I put 510 gear drive on about 12 k miles back she has 65 k on her now , I have on wine or noise Just thunderheaders but It starts up fast and sounds good
