Default ENGINE BUILD ADVICE

I have a 2007 road glide that I'm building as a 103". I am asking for some advice on the build from some folks with experience in this area or from some who have done something similar and can give real world results. I ride to work every day about 100 miles round trip and do some two up riding with luggage on occasion. I want to get better performance but do not want to have detonation issues or a significant loss of torque in the low end. Wondering what commpression, cam profiles, and heads to go with. Right now I have the SE air cleaner and rinehart true duals with SERT and oil cooler. I have the big bore cylinders but have held off on the heads, cams, and pistons until I can get a good idea on which way to go.
Thanks in advance
Jason

i had a screamin eagle cnc ported htcc head 103 package (all hd parts with 260 cams andse ignition on carb'd bike with 45 mikuni) and it had only modest power. i would avoid the htcc heads and pistons if i were you. i eventually went to a 113, but i ditched the htcc heads and pistons and went with all head-quarters products - had stock hd heads ported, bought head-quarters cams, ignition, and pistons (all from head-quarters) - best thing i ever did. doug is very knowledgeable and you need a complete package where everything works together or you will likely have lackluster performance. call doug and get his advice - among the best there is. now i have no detonation problems in very hot riding weather here with only pump gas available. very strong motor and nice.

you may want to stay with all harley components and have hd dealership do the work if you are trying to maintain some kind of warranty, but their packages will not compare to the performance builders out there. they will be ok, but most will be simply bolt-on packages and you will pay more for less product. some head work will be very beneficial, and you may want to send your heads out to someone like Big Boyz to do their very good but economical street porting job. they may be able to give you some recommendations on cams, etc - again go for a complete package where the headwork, cams, compression, etc is all working together.

I sold all my SE and S&S crap and went all HQ, best thing I ever did! got the HQ ignition too.
I have a 95 in sport/touring set up with the Firestorm cams, very powerful. very reliable.

I agree 100%............
If I was to do it all over again I'd go with all HQ Build. It will out run & out last any HD SE build you could pay for.

I too have a 07 96" and did alot of calling around getting prices and reccomendations. I would call KingOfCubes.com, HillsideCycle.comor BigBoyzcycles.com and get from them what to do. Keep in mind that with the 96" you have the stroker crank so they will try to get you to go to 107". All these guys have done a bunch of what you want and know the combo that works. The main thing I would pay attention to is how the heads and cam work togetherand how EASY it will be totune.

I agree with all the HQ and GMR make goods packages, but dont sell HD components short. Just put 3850 miles on my HD build, hard miles, two up, fully loaded Ultra, and just turned over 11,000 miles since the build. Didn't use a drop of oil on the trip, never detonated and averaged over 40mpg for the trip which was mostly very hard riding in the mountains and very fast (80+) through Ms and Ar to get throughthe 105+ temps.

You do have to match parts though and I'm running a Woods cam that is specifically designed (.650 lift) for the CNC Ported heads.

And I wouldn't hit a dog in the a$$ with most of the guys that do the builds at dealers. Do it yourself whatever the build, if you have the aptitude and tools.
