I need some advise on selecting the best cam for what parts i have. 2003 heritace softail.I want to go with a gear drive for sure. I have 95 big bore ,se httc non cnc heads ,10 5 to 1 httc pistons. se ignition, hsr 42 carb, se air cleaner, baker dd 6 speed. VH big shots long with power ports, thinking of going to a 2 into 1 pipe? i want as much low and mid range torque as possible. ride 2 up a lot. also i currently have a se 204 cam in it and love the lopey idle .hope to get that with the new cam
Loppy idle, S&S .585 cam will do the trick but, low and midrange torque would steer you toward the Head-Quarters .575 Firestorm cams. Ah...decisions!!!
Alot of people have been disapointed by that particular set-up, most endup getting different heads and pistons or tearing down the set up and having the heads CCed and reworked and I belive some other particulars that are escaping me right at this moment.
Don't have any personal experance with the top end assembly you have but IF it is set up right some impressive results. That is a big IF. You really need some one who has done this build before to help you as I have heard all kinds of problems with people who just bolt it togeather and go. You are all ready on track trying to chose the correct cam. Keep it up.
I did that exact build in 03 and went with the Woods Performance TW5G cam, was a torque monster and trouble free. That cam is a .575 lift but only 234 duration and not a lot of overlap so it will not give you a real thumpy idle. I was at 102hp, 112 tq, but was also running fuel injection, not carbed.
The HTCC heads will easily handle this cam. The HQ 575 also comes highly recommended but I have not had personal experience with it.

I run the HQ Firestorm (AKA) .575 cam, it has a decent idle and 240 deg, intake duration, and a 256 on the exhaust to help with those restrictive ports! pulls hard right off idle and up.
The idle sounds alittle different than some HD cams, it sounds more like a cammed up big block at ilde.
