Default Rebuild Start up

I am starting up this weekend after boring, porting, 37G cam install, lifters, pushrods. I plan on starting up with a thinner oil 30wfor quicker oil flow. I have read an articlethat advizesstart up with rocker boxes off to make sure I have oil pressure up top? Is this normal.Any otheradvice on start up procedures?

I would just put it all together and leave the spark plugs out.
and just turn her over until the oil light gose off.

if you primed the oil filter and put her together right, It will get oil presure real quick.

I just started my rebuild up Mon. and I followed the S&S recommendations. ( somewhere around here there is a posting or go to their site. Also at NRHS Performance where I got my cylinders and pistons) They want to let the rings get togethercause that is where the most friction is at first. There is a issue of micro welding at the rings if they get too hot at the very first. Very good thing to do I think. I used my wifes accord oil 0-20 cause that was what I had around. Only run, idle, for 10 sec and let things cool down for 6 times. Then do the same 30-45 sec. maybe 1500 RPM only. Change oil and filter to higher weight, I'm running Mobile1, 5-40 Diesel, for now till I get a few miles taking real easy then 20-50 again with new filter. Harley's new 5 micro filter will cause the bypass to bypass most of the oil thru the relief valve when it is cold. Need to help the volume here with light oil, doesn't get hot anyway just warm.
I left my rear rocker box cover off to make sure I had oil at first. One thing less to worry about. Even with 0-20 oil it took all the first sessions and till the 2nd, 30 secrun, before oil got to the top. Maybe 1-2 minutes. So make sure there is plenty of assembly oil there. Then there was lots of oil so wipe off or some might get on the back pipe and CATCH FIRE QUICK SO WATCH CLOSE.
Runs nice now.

Good Luck with yours

yes, thats what I did.

I found some Castrol 20 50 @ Target for 60 cents a quart! So I just let a little heat get in the cylinders, and shut her off.

I didnt do the every 10 seconds thing like old gunny, but I only let her run for a minute or two untill I see some smoke comming of the exhaust and shut her down for a few.

I have a HQ build and Doug is not a particular as S&S.
I checked for leaks after the second or third time of heat cycling, then I went for a short ride.
not lugging the engine, and not going over 4th gear.

after that round the block trip I let it cool off again.
then I went for a longer run doing short full throttle bursts in 3rd gear from 20 mph to 60 mph or so. Then Id let the engine brake the bike to 20 mph and Id do it again.
8 to 10 times.

after 50 miles I dumped the cheap O oil and put some better oil in for 1000 miles when I switched to Royal Purple full synth.

I just turn the rear wheel several times by handand watch the oil flow and I always have instant oil pressure.

I follow NRHS's heat cycling recommendation.

I think this is all good.
I'm old enough to remember doing things all kind of ways. On old flat tappet car engines the thing to do to break in the cam and lifters is to start and go straight to 2000 RPM. If not they might fail on you. They actually spin around on the cam lobes.(built to do that).
Cannot do that with Harley engines. or roller tapets. Pistons and rings are the hot places here.

The other thing is the after market forged pistons fit tighter then the old days. Thats a good thing but needs TLC when new. Rings the same thing, they're great but tender when new.

Also it was too cold to ride so starting up and running for 10-20 sec then cooling down was easy to do.
