i've experience a slight knock when i first start the bike and when it's cold,it's also more noticable when it's on the jiffy stand, seems to be coming from around the primary cover, maybe up front. has anyone experienced anything like this or something similar?....oh yeah....the model isan '07 softail deuce......96"...6 speed...stage one
Depends on your skills. A manual would be good to have ,as the days of hammer and chisel, along with a pair of vise grips are gone for the newer Harleys. The compensating sprocket is on the outside of the engine, but inside the primary. You have to determine the cause of the loosness in the system as to whether it's the bolt or springpack. Before disassembly rotate the clutch basket back and forth while watching the engine sprocket. If you see the gear moving separately from the center shaft extensionsection, your problem has been identified. It should not move by hand.By doing a pretorque without loctite on the comp, check for play again. If it's still there, the comp was never loose and the problem is weak springpack in the rotor. Once you have a solution, use red loctite on the comp bolt and clutch basket nut. Don't forget to mark the outside of the chain, and put paint dots on the shaft extension and comp gear, so the parts mate as previously assembled. Compress the auto chain adjuster and tie wrap it before removing it if possible. The manual has all the other info needed to do the task. Although it's a simple task to just replace the disc washers, HD in their typical greedy fashion do not list washers separately and you have to buy the whole altenator rotor to get them[:@] Ron
thanks for that info Ron..........,i hope this isn't the problem, because it sound fairly technical for my abilities, looks like i'm in to get raped bye the 'stealer' again...........hope they don't give me a hard time about this.....of course it will not make the sound when i'm at the dealer....thats a given(murphys law)
Had a loose primary chain that sounded like a knock, sure worth investigating the easy stuff before you pull the engine down the harley engine is a great amplifier of noises. Ride an old panhead sometime and your bike will sound as quiet as an electric motor.

They will tell you it's normal, or never heard of it before. Sometimes the line is , you're the first one with this that we've heard of. Class dealer bs. Most hate to honour warranty claims . An Indi may work out better if the dealer is a no go. Ron
