Default Air Filter Maintenance

First let me apologize if this question has already been asked, but I tried the search function and didn't get any returns. I must also frame this up so everyone understands that I am new to Harleys and motorcycles in general. So here goes:I purchased a 2007 FXDL last April and had a stage 1 air cleaner installed, 3 inch Khromewerks slip on mufflers and had the ECM remapped. What I am now wondering is this, is there any special type of maintenance I need to perform on the air-cleaner? A cleaning solvent every "X" number of miles followed by a special oil? Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Chris

If it's a K&N reusable filter, you don't have to clean it very often. The dirt it collects actually helps it filter more dirt. I believe mine said once every 30K if used on paved roads. K&N sells a cleaning kit with spray oil to soak the filter with for about 12 bucks.

Thanks for the replies. The filter is the HD stage 1 filter. Is the maintenance the same as the K&N? I couldn't find any thing on the net about this. Thanks again.

Some SE kits had a paper filter. They are a plain white filter just like in your car. If you have a re-usable gauze filter, then it's a K&N. They are red in color, and have a fine mesh on the outside of the filter element.

Default Screamin Eagle Air Cleaner Maintenance P/N 29442-99D)

Here's what the instructions bulletin J04163 Rev. 2006-06-06 says:

1) Inspect every 5K miles more often in dusty conditions.

2) Clean as follows:

a. Remove and wash element by immersing it on edge in a shallow pan containing enough Air Cleaner/ Degreaser (P/N 99883-88T) to cover no more than 3/4 the depth of the filter pleats. Do not let dirty solution get inside the element. Carefully "roll" the element in the solution around its perimeter until the outer surface of the filter pleats has been soaked.

b. Remove filter element from cleaner/degreaser and allow 5 minutes for the cleaner to dissolve the dirt.

c. From the inside out, rinse the element with cold water. Shake off the excess water, and allow the element to dry. Do not dry with compressed air.

3. Install air cleaner element and cover.

Hope this helps!

Don't forget to re-oil it!

I don't oil the filter on my personal bikes because it restricts air flow, not much but a little. I oil customers bikes unless they request me to do other wise. I'm sure alot of people will disagree with this but I have seen the difference on the dyno. It's probably not enough to notice a difference but I have never had any problems with my bikes and I've put alot of miles on them.

If you're running a SE filter, check the plate. Some are stamped DO NOT OIL. These are new generation, soap and water, drip dry filters.

Not oiling an oil-type filter isn't a big deal. It just means that you're allowing larger micron contaminants to enter the cylinder head. Can anyone tell the difference between .0017 and .0024 grit?

Your cylinder walls can but heh, you said you didn't care so I won't either.

Dry, no oil, as what we have found here as well.
