I have a 99FXST and the tank holds 5.2 gallons, 1.2 for reserve and 4.0 for the main tank. I seem to go around 105 on the main tank and it will shut off on me. I will switch it to reserve and head to the gas station. My problem is when I fill up the tank, it will only hold around 2.40 gallons and it is filled to the gills. Now, I would undertand about 26 miles to the gallon and then fill up that would leave me with 1.2 gallons for the reserve. But every time I fill up, I never put more than 2.5 gallons in it. What is the deal??? The bike cuts off on my only after 105 miles (which does not bother me) but when I go fill up I can not put but 2.5 gallons in; where is the other 1.5 of gas? Is this me not knowing what I am doing or what. It would seem if I am only putting in 2.5 gallons I should be able to go further on the main tank. I am confused on this.
I have a 92 flstc and mine will do that occ,,,but I have two tanks .When it does that ,I lean it over to the left side for a few minutes ..This refills the left tank .I still go for gas but the correct amount for a tankful = mileage doesnt change .I would think this would apply only to " double tanks.I keep a full tank most of the time.( If you lean it over,it is a 2 man job to do it safely .,I have a bar that slips in under the frame on the left side, saddle bag size...Make sure you are not riding on reserve. Not trying to be smart, but I have seen it done...Just trying to help ..
Check and make sure the cross over under the tank is working and not restricted. It sounds as if you are running of only one side of the tank and not both.
I have a 98 fxstc, sounds like you have some sort of problem. If you have checked everything suggested, pull the dash and check the vent lines that run in between the tanks. Also check the diapham in the pet ****, or better yet put the spring on the other side of the diaphram as suggested in the tech tips.
