Ok I have a 88 FLSTC I have the 2 tank set up. I understand that I have the cross over tube going from the Right tank to the left. When I bought the bike the side with the ON,OFF RES tank is full the other side (right)
Does not have much gas in it. Am i missing something is one a reserve does the right side of the tank empty first and the left side that is full is the reserve. Hence I need to fill the right side . Im a little confused .
Dual tanks with a crossover acts as a single tank.It has more gas in the left tank because it's been leaning over on the kickstand. The on/reserve/off is a function of the petcock. 'On' is running gas through a taller tube than 'reserve'.
Even though the tanks are connected, you still have to fill both tanks. If you fill only one tank, it takes so long for the level in both tanks to equalize through the tiny quarter-inch crossover line that you won't get both tanks full if you fill only one.
The way I do it is to fill the right tank first right to the top, cap it off then remove the left cap and fill the left tank to an inch below the neck. That was the way an old-timer told me to fill that tanks and it's worked for me for 25 years.
When you fill up you fill both sides, left side first then the right side while watching the left so it doesn't overflow
Being the 2 tanks are connected the gas will seek to be level,so the left will have more gas when on the jiffy stand.
There's also a crossover tube on top for air displacement.
The left side (the side with the petcock) has a non vented gas cap, only the right side cap is vented.
This is so when the bike's parked if the fuel expands from being over a hot engine or parked in the sun it doesn't overflow.
When you fill up you fill both sides, left side first then the right side while watching the left so it doesn't overflow
I always put the left side cap on as soon as it is full, no chance of overflow, unless I slop fuel all over the right side tank, but that has never happened, really, honest, I wouldn`t lie.....
