Ok, my bad re "well built", but for what you say about being built to specs, I have to disagree, they are built to specs, it's just that the spec window is larger than most rice burner builds, this is largely due to what I mentioned about over dimensions, the engines are built to allow for a lot of tq at a reasonbly low rpm, hence the specs don't need to be that tight and above all, it makes them more servicable. The only poor built part on a Harley that I agree with is the inner cam needle bearing, but since it doesn't take a lot to replace, it's managable.
But ... in all, I agree to disagree

I waited 45 years to own my first Harley ! are there better machines out there ? Maybe ? faster ? more powwerfull ? yep ! But I bought a brand new 2008 RKC and wouldn,t trade her for nothin !!!! shes a H-D [8D]
Also think there are lots of things HD can do to keep Air Cooled:
Oil cooling. Some have this now.
Thicker cast in cylinderliners like Jims or Axtell. Keeping cylenders round is the porpose of water cooling to a great extent
Coated pistons and chambers and exhaust ports to keep heat out of the engine a lot.
