Default How Many Hours to:

How many hours does it take a decent dealer's mechanic to swap 88" Clyinders for 95" Cylinders, change out a set of cams, install the pusch rods, change the head gasket and bolt everything back together.

All HD parts, except Cams HQ 34s.

Any ideas will be appreciated.

Thank you

I could do that in about 8-10 hours start to finish.

Most time is spent getting to the motor, taking off the exhaust, gas tank, once you get to the motor it goes pretty quick.

Even the home mechanic can do this in a weekend including the periodic breaks for the occasional adult beverage!

(not too many though, dont want to forget to torque something)

For me it's a weekend job with the guy who owns the bike. The twincam is built for shade tree mechanics. In my opinion the Harley motor has gotten easier to work on over the years. Far cry from the days when I would spend hours just scraping the head gasket off a set of shovelhead heads....

In my experiance, its not really a set time. I try to cover all bases and measure everything that comes off or goes on the bike. So i do charge a few more hours than most but not as much as i actually do work on the bike.

If its a basic build and just getting assembled than up to 10 hours is inline. When your get to the more exotics takes me about 18-20 hours. No stone unturned, and the details on the customers bill reflect that. All measurements are recorded and passed off to the customer. I do that just incase there is a problem i will rember what i did. I also take pictures so incase i have a problem, its easy to email the customer a pic.

Thanks all,

Local Dealer quoted $800 to change cams, R&R Cylinders and Pistons, bolt everything back together.

Well know Indy quoted $5000 for a "True 100 x 100".

Got to keep reminding myself compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges.
