With my 2 into 1 pipes, the problem was there but its much more pronounced with the new Troublemakers.
Stock CV carb.
Bike is running at normal temp, running about 60 in 5th gear, back off the throttle hard and it starts popping
loud like a back fire. It will do this all the way down a hill too.
It will go away if the bike is warm and I leave the enrichner on about 1/3 of the way. All the way down a
long hill. If I push the enrichner in half way down the hill, it starts popping again.
With that I have gone from a 190 to a 195 main, 45 to 48 pilot. and raised the needle up but no improvement.
Mine's doing the same thing, but not quite as bad. I've got V&H BigShot Staggered and a Hypercharger on the intake.
I've shimmed my needle 2 washers, got a #48 slow jet. I don't know for sure what I have in the main jet, probably still stock. My plugs still show I'm running on the lean side.
I guess I'm gonna go up to a #50 and see if that helps, I don't think going up on the main jet will help my popping.....but I'm just a newbie. I'm gonna keep tinkering with it though.
Reading some of the other posts, TC indicates that cutting the spring could cause popping, thus a weak spring could do the same. The Yost Master kit comes with a good spring, the power tube, various jets and needles. I am not sure what tube is in my CV carb because when I ask for main jets for an CV carb for an EVO, the jet threads are too large to fit in the tube. This kit will at least put me in known territory.
Went to the Harley Dealer today to talk about this problem. Found out that my spring was shortened way too much, I had the wrong emulsion tube and needle. So he recommended some parts (stock spring, stock tube, stock needle with one washer, 190 main, 48 pilot) as a starting point. I already had the washers and 48 pilot and the rest of the parts were cheap. The bike actually runs better but still pops on decel. Next step is to take in with those settings and let them solve it. They will tune it for $98 including parts. Well worth it to me if they get rid of the popping. Will make an appointment tomorrow.
I was looking at the timing Saturday. Found out the VOES was always on (the carb always is supplying it vacumn). If I disconnect the VOES vacumn hose, the VOES works properly (turns on and off) if I suck on the tube. The air mixture screw hardly has any affect on the idle whether its all the way in or 6 turns out. I left it at 3 turns out like the HD dealer said. I will try the 50 pilot jet today after the ride.
I'd put in a torque cone if you hadn't already, check for exhaust leaks and/or intake leaks
The Troublemaker pipes have a torque cone built in (of sorts).
Things are real close now. I have a 52 slow (pilot) jet in there and I have to get the revs up pretty high then slam the throttle closed, it pops one or two times then quits. Normal riding with decel and I have no pops even down hill. My local dealers are both out of the 55 slow jet at the moment.
As stated earlier I have the standard tube and needle for an Evo and a 190 main jet. I have one washer under the needle and the bikes seems to run great. The vacumn problem with the VOES seems to have disapeared. FM - I love them problems.
