Default valve train need adjustment?

i got a 2005 roadking custom with 9500 miles on it.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; there is a ticking in the motor that reminds me of the ticking youd hear on a small block chevy when the rocker arms need to be snugged up a little.&nbsp\\; anyone with experience think i need to make an adjustment for this or would it just be the pushrods rubbing against a low clearance area?&nbsp\\; any input good or bad would be grealty appreciated since this sound is a little annoying. thanks in advance.&nbsp\\; randy

Default RE: valve train need adjustment?

if it helps any my 07 fltr was pretty quiet when new but now at 10,000 miles&nbsp\\; I am starting to get some valve train noise ,I am not really to concerned about it my evo springer did the same after about 10,000 miles and progressively got worse but always ran strong right up to the day I sold it with 65,000 miles on it and is still running strong but the new owner does complain about the noisy valve train,my old shovelhead had a noisy valvetrain from day one and I put a ton of miles on it and it never missed a beat,the advantage I have with my 07 fltr is I can turn my stereo up a notch or two and voila no more valve train noise.&nbsp\\;

They all do that!! There are some things you can do to help but the fact is that nothing is going to explode or anything, it's just normal. One thing is to check the rockers end play. If greater than .005" you can shim it with shovelhead shims. I like mine between
.003" and .005". Put the shims on the pushrod side. You can add a stiffer spring to your oil pump that will raise your pressure and sometimes that will help with a lifter problem. A lot of folks change over to synthetic oil after 5000 miles or so. The thinner synthetic will not mask as much noise as regular oil although it's still better IMHO. If your running any aftermarket adjustable push rods, except SE tapered ones, they will hit the top of the push rod tubes and be forced out of the socket on the rocker arms and when they pop back in the socket you get a loud tick. This is not a problem with stock, smaller diameter, pushrods. If your running gear drive cams you can check the endplay on the gears. If too much you will get a ticking from the gear changing direction as the cam goes over center and puts the force in the opposite direction. This was common on the Evo engines. Hope this helps.

Really no adjustments to be made on a stock engine as the pushrods are a fixed length and not adjustable. If it isn't overly loud, just ignore it.
