Default Knocking sound

First let me say hey to all. Nice forum. Great people. Love it here. I had my 07 Streetglide engine modified to a 103 with pro performer heads. 585 gear driven cams. RH True duels. 10:5.1 Sounds great. The only problem is, when the bike warms up, theres a tapping on the left side. The warmer it gets, the louder the tap. I carried it back to the dealer and they said it was the heads. I've owned a lot of bikes and iv never heard a engine tap like that when it was warm. Does anyone have an idea what it could be ? Im worried somethings not right and im going to be out an engine.

Hi, Had my bike pumped up to 95" and just installed a high flow oil pump. Now I too am hearing a tapping or clicking noise towards the front left side. pulled the primary cover, checked the compensator and chain, also checked push rods. Can't find the noise maker.
Hope we get some ideas here. If not guess I'll ride till it gets bad enough to really show itself. Good Luck.

I installed Edelbrock heads on my 98 Evo and have had a "noisy valve train" ever since. Mine's on the right side though, and it sounds like poorly adjusted pushrods, but I've adjusted them three times now with the same results. I don't like that the noise is there, but I've learned to live with it.

When the dealer says it's the heads, do they also say "and don't worry about it."?

Could be a wrist pin. A common problem is the compensator sprocket nut.

my bike was always quiet until dealer did 95 kit it had light tick what sounds to me like a noisy rocker arm/lifter type noise. 3000 miles later really ticks quite loud.dealer said nature of the beast said he has heard louder noisier ones an some are quiet. this answer dosnt seem kosher to me.

What pushrods did you use? High lift cams require tapered rods or you will have rubbing. Especially if you use the old style SE adjustables

Harley engines will tick. This is normal. Much of the typical ticking can be attributed to the valve seat being out of concentricity with the valve guide, so the valve lands on one edge first, then slides sideways a bit to finally seal. Also, the valve train is rather heavy, so if the cam drops the valve on the seat too hard (typical in agressive aftermarket cams) the valve will bounce a few times before it finally stays closed.
A careful valve seat cutting and some additional valve spring seat pressure goes a long way toward a quiet engine.

But, yeah, they all really -do- do that.

Thanks for all the replies. It might just be me or I don't know, it seems like my bike started the noise making after the new oil pump was installed. Which I did because of wet sumping. Snugged up the push rods a bit, nothing changed. It will tick a few times after turning the engine off. As if it is coasting down. We used a scope while it was running but found nothing. As for the valve seating, it had a new valve job on the build 3500 miles ago. They didn't make any noise before. I would think if it is a wrist pin it would be causing more trouble than noise. No smoke, sounds good except the tick.
sheot man, mo power = cash on the barrel head I suppose

The pushroda are adjustable. They did a 103 with 37-G cams to start with with no tapping involved afterworda. When they put the 585 cams in it started. But the mechanic messed up the front head somehow. He told me there was slop in the piston and they had to re bore the jugs. I paid for new 103 jugs and nothing was wrong the first time so i don't know what he messed up or had to replace. I've sence taken the bike back three times complaining about the tapping. They rode it a total of 50 miles and always come back saying "THATS NORMAL" . I've never heard a v twin engine tap like that before. SO i told them i was going to go let another mechanic talk a look at it and see with the problem was. They told me if i did, it would void the warranty.
