Default OIL PUMP ?s

What are some of the things that can be done to a stock oil pump to increase flow and or pressure? Thanks, jt.

The usual ...... make model and year... then we can respond. If you are talking Shovelhead then I can really trick it out. Grearing, screens, opening up the window in the case... But the new stuff.... Make model year.

Yeah, that might help. 2002 TC88. Everything i have looked at talks about replacing the stock pump. But what about something like a bypass spring? jt

Nothing can be done to the pump unless you replace it with another brand like fueling or s./e. The stock flow/return is fine for a stock bike. The baisley spring or zippers shim on the other hand should come factory. Its a nice bump in psi and usually has great effects on the motor.

I would go with a HD or SE brand oil pump since it would be within HD design specs if you feel you must, but it seems like a lot of work to change something that doesn't need it. HD's use low pressure-high volume oil pumps and to change this design balance could end up with too much oil in places you don't want (such as the heads and valves) because while Hd's are great for getting oil INTO places, but evacuation of it has been the problem. The current models are designed for X amount of oil at X pressure and there is a such thing as too much oil and you may even see an increase in seal seepage from a modification. Learned this from early model MMI class where we have taken apart flatheads to knuckles to pans to shovels to evos and have been hammered in lecture of the engineering (lube) progression to the end result of today's bikes. Early models can be modified since they were at a lower rung on the design ladder and had oil delivery/evac problems but the late models are the end-culmination of all prior lessons learned. Better things to buy... have a SERT?

Just changing the bypass spring will not add more oil pressure at idle. The plunger is closed anyway. It will add more pressure once the rpms come up though. It you want more at idle, engine has to be tight on clearances and more oil flow from a better pump is needed.

Thanks for the responses. I guess i should have stated what else i have this build. Ported heads, wiseco .30 over FT pistons, SE 257 cams and a mikuni 42 carb. The bike already has a DTT and VH pipes. It runs pretty good, but i want more power. I just needed to know about the oil pump. But it sounds like it would be fine stock. I guess that's why i couldn't find alot about it. Thanks, jt
