Default It begins this weekend

I am going to go ahead and tear into my motor this weekend. I have the BB kit, ported heads, cams and a box full of other parts. This will be the first Harley engine i have worked on, but not the first engine. I am on leave until the 6th of JAN, so i hope i can get it done by then. Can anyone think of any heads ups for me? Any info would be appreciated. jt

A 98 inch kit with Big Boyz heads. Just looking for stuff to look out for that isn't in the shop manual. Maybe easier ways to do something, or a way of doing something that will keep from breaking parts.

Sometimes the shop manual is vague about procedures and i am sure someone on here has figured out an easier way to do it.

Sorry i can't come up with more specific questions, as i haven't tore into the engine yet. jt

I have the SE 257 cams. I know the cams are made by Comp Cams and i have had really good luck with their cams in my cars. I am going to stay with the chain drive set-up. I will polish the chain and i have new guides to put in. The heads were set-up for the S&S 575G cams, but i changed my mind about them. Some info i am looking for is what can be done to the stock oil pump to improve it without replacing it. I have an oil pressure gauge for it, but was jokingly told i might not want to put it on. Any thoughts on this? jt

Default Install help

Even though we are not even close to being involved with this project, call us if you run into a snag. We will get you through it. Shop is open 8-5 M-F, Sat 9-2, or by appointment.
Yes, Competion Cams, in Memphis, manufactures those for Harley, but under Harley's specs.(ouch)
BTW, the 257 cams don't come on until much later than most folks want.
At 10.4-6, a Wood 44 Magnum would be a good choice, as well as many others.
Cheers,
Scott

Agreed scott the 257 are a late builder, you can over come this some what with compression at 10.6-10.8 to help out with that. Other cams would offer you better over all usable power.

That's not quite as high as i had planned to go with the compression. I have it figured out at 10.4 to 1. Do you think that will be to low? It's a FXST, solo riding on the hwy, with very little in the city.

Scott, did i talk to you about this time last year while i was in Afghanistan? jt

I'm planning on going with big inches (117/124) with my 05 bagger after the first of the year. He doesn't know it yet but this is why I'm planning to discuss and have my build done by Scott at Hillside. Nothing less than a class act to help a serviceman with a project that he has no stake in.

JTS..I've have read countless testimonials regarding Hillside Cycles experience and work..take him up on his offer if you run into questions..Scott and his shop are the real deal.

Good luck with your build and thanks for your service.

Well lets get some specifics, like ALL your parts. 98" jugs? Nikasil? Iron lined? Pistons(dome or flat top)? Compression? Head gasket type and thickness?

What parts do you still need to buy etc?

Also let me ask you this? You said u picked up SE 257 cams, but where do you want your POWERBAND to be? Most people for hot street bikes want it low through the midrange. SE 257 cams are more midrange to top end cams, so be aware of that.
