Default Explaining Core Shift, Stressed Cyls and other info - HD vs Aftermarket

I am thinking that a lot of newer owners getting ready to do a build are going down the path of buying all HD components, SE heads, new big bore cyls and the like. This article does a real nice job of explaining why you get a bigger bang for your buck when going to an aftermarket head porter, using (boring) your existing cylinders and removes some of the mystery of why aftermarket kits will usually leave the HD builds in the dust, not too mention you can actually save money at times going aftermarket.

LINK REMOVED AS IT NO LONGER DIRECTS TO ORIGINAL INFORMATION

Just left my local dealer, we were talking builds and the parts guy who is very knowleagable indicated their service dept gave him the word that they are to push all HD builds. In the past they have used a lot of aftermarket kits and components. The reason is their margin on the HD stuff is much bigger. Anyway, have fun reading

We all know who likes the non-HD stuff and who likes the HD stuff by our sig's, it is not a big mystery, sometimes the reasons to stay with an all HD build are more important to those of us that do than the reasons given than those of you that do the aftermarket. We can read and reason just like you!

Huh? I didn't take Dalton's post or the link as being "either/or" HD v. aftermarket. Would I buy and SE Big Bore kit instead of having my own cylinders bored by a competent machinist? No. But others have reasons to do so, but they should know of the alternative.

Would preservation of a warranty by using HD engine parts be a relevant consideration to me--sure it would and has been to me and many others.

And it's too much of an overgeneralization to say it's either aftermarket or HD when the facts are even those who prefer aftermarket headporting, cams, etc. have no qualms about using the HD billet cam plate, high volume oil pump, SE 50mm throttle body, etc.

I agree that there are reasons to stay with an all HD build as some dealers will warranty all parts and labor, but only at their dealer. And as Harley pingman indicated, there are HD parts that do meet the need. This was more for information purposes as lots ask about HD vs aftermarket and I thought that the link was pretty darn good.

When it comes right down to it, everyone makes their own decision and should do so being fully informed.

Absolutely I could not have said it better, there are many ways to arrive at your intended destination. I did not try to say that having all the info that you can get was not the best thing to have, it is best to learn all you can before jumping off that cliff! Having an open mind is the MOST important thing to possess when making your desicion,if having had no prior experience with the motor game. And having said that isn't the grass always greener anyway!!!!!

the old expression still stands true today..
if something sounds too good to be true take a long hard look at the person who is trying to sell it too you.

i also beleive that a lot of people have been ripped off or lyed to and they feel that the moco will not do that.
there are a lot more hd builds out there then any mfg. the moco has a receipe and it works for them.
but remember how many big hp builds do the moco do thatactually make big hp/ta..
i know dave at jd's cycleworks has re-build a couple 124's that the local dealer did and screwed up so all the money the customer saved he had to re-spend and re-do everythijng. not that indys are any better some are just down right atrousious.
