I have a 2002 road gluide and I'm installing a gear drive I have everthing back togather but having a hard time centering my oil pump I was told to use Aliment pins I have a machine shop and would like to make the pins but don't know the sizes is ther anybody have the size of these pins thanks
With all these stories about the crank runout problems have to relate that to the alinement pins or rear wheel turning methods.
I am a real world type of person. Whatever machanical abilities i have goes into that and the thinking about how things relate.
Alinement pins assume a almost perfect crank, not much runout.
My 07 and 08 service manual for the B motor doesn't even mention these things.
I think they are there for the HD tech at the Dealers to save time.
I use the rear wheel method. Set all the cam plate bolts in not tight. Gently tighten the oil pump bolts per the numbers there as you turn the wheel. When things are set like they want to be tighten all cam plate bolts per the manual.
I just feel things are right then and the oil pump relates to the crank how it needs to. One less thing to worry about.

I think Gunny is describing the "natural" method, which is the one I plan to use on my 2009 XBNZ during my cam swap. One point of clarification: is it necessary to spin the rear wheel at the same time as tightening down the allens, or can you tighten-turn engine 2-3 times-tighten-turn.....Thanks for feedback.
I installed a Daytona high pressure high volume oil pump on my 08 Ultra the new pump is thicker than OEM and the stock alignment pins do not reach the threads are there longer ones available or do I just sequentially tighten the 4 bolts while turning the rear wheel wile in top gear?
The alignment pins you all talk about are used on tc88 motors pre 07 touring and softail and 06 dyna. Newer motors do not require but not a bad ideal to use if you have them. And rotation of the engine by the rear wheel in completely fine direction the bike travels. If you have the primary cover off you can use the compensator bolt. One thing you do have to watch when using gear drive cams in crankshaft runout. Goodluck and if you mess it up you can always bring it to me.☺
