Putting my '07 Heritage back together after a cam change and wondering if I need to do the spin the real wheel method to center the oil pump if I've already got the (2) tapered aligning pins that can be put in the pump holes diagonally. Also, I'm assuming that the (4) oil pump bolts get put in after the cam plate has already been torqued back into the cases?
Your manual should have the directions when using those pins. I believe with the pins you do not need to spin tire. And yes, align pump after cam plate is installed. fwiw - I aligned mine without the pins. Someone spun the rear tire while I slowly tightened down the 4 bolts.
I'll check my manual tonight. If I do need to turn the motor over, is it OK to do this by turning the motor over with the crank bolt? I've got the bike on a lift and don't have anything to raise the a$$ end of the bike up with. Since the pushrods aren't yet in(got adjustables) thinking it should turn over pretty easy. Best case, I can just use my tapered pins and not even have to do this.
I would not turn the crank bolt several times, I mean several times... to center oil pump. And, the wheel should be turned continuously while tightening the four bolts. With the pins, you should not have to turn wheel. If you do, remove plugs, borrow a jack or something, and get some help. It is not worth rushing the job and having pump issues after it is back together.
I doubt very much it's necessary to spin the engine with the correct locating pins. Centering with the wheel would be more hit and miss in my view for acurate center.

*DO NOT turn the motor with the crank or cam bolt.
*Torque 6 allen heads on cam plate in pattern shown in manual.
*Install 2 alignment tools in holes 1 and 2 of oil pump.
*Start 2 allens in holes 3 and 4.
*While rotating...tighten alignment tools and allens until snug, using pattern on plate.
*Using same tightening sequence, tighen tools and 2 allens to 40-45 in-lbs.
*Remove alignment tools- replace with allens.
*Final torque to all four screws to 90-120 in-lbs, using pattern on plate.

Hmmm. Wonder how engine shops do it or the factory if you can't use the engine bolt. Just curious.
