2005 Ultra with 10,000 miles on it... When warmed engine is turned off, there is still a lot of "pop, crackle, ting-ting-ting..." going on from the engine. I thought that once the engine was "broken in" and the metal had expanded and contracted some, this would diminish. True? Or is this just characteristic of the air cooled v-twin?
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I hear some of that under the hood of my car, but it is quite a bit more "noisy" than compared to the other bikes I ride with... 'wings, Victory, Triumph, some other Harleys, etc... Just wondered if it was indiginous to the HD engine design.
Agree with PhilM , don't remember this with my stock pipes / SE slippons , my V&H make all kinds of racket when cooling . Others I've talked to see to have these SCARY noise issues mainly with aftermarket pipes , anyone know why this is a aftermarket only issue ?
It's because it takes a much higher compound metalergic alloy to build "cool looking" aftermarket pipes. Because of that they have to make more noise when cooling. They make more noise when thay are warming up too, we just have a hard time hearing them. [&:]
Dan, this is not just an after market pipe issue. My street glide with totally stock exhaust system makes all kinds of crackle, clinks and clanks when i shut the bike off until everything cools down. I think alot of the noises are coming from the heat shields................BG
