Default exhaust vs. engine niose

I still have the stock pipes on my softail custom, and when riding I can hear the clanging of the valves/pistons over the exhaust.

When I had my old metric cruiser years ago, it was the same way (since exhaust on that thing was super quiet).

Despite the loud pipes some of you have, does the engine of a Harley just have a pronounced voice?

Air cooled engines in general are noisy. I can hear my cam gears whining, valve train tapping. Its worse with a windshield.

Mechanical music.

My last bike, I drilled the baffles. I'm going to drill out my new Harley's tomorrow. Once that is done, the upper engine noise isn't that noticable. Another issue I ran into. I can't hear the engine speed with the stock pipes. It's driving me nuts. I'll be glad when I fix it.

I have stock pipes on my bike and really enjoy the interesting sounds that come from atwin cam engine.

I findthe radio has plenty of volume with stock pipes and that I can enjoy the music or hear weather band when I'm going cross country.

Just for fun, I put my extra set of SE pipes on the bike andafter a few minutes of the roaring racket, I re-installed the stock pipes. Yes, it does run better with the SE pipes, but I've had enoughhearing loss already.
