Default Dual fire coil question

Dont know much about the ignition on newer bikes but i was told on my 04 N/T it uses a dual fire coil. Now, how exactly does this work, and is that the reason you dont get that old padum-padum sound of older bikes? Can a single fire be used?

Ok thanks, is the ide sound different on newer bikes because less aggresive cams? My 04 just doesnt have that "harley" sound at an idle, just curious as to why.
