Default How Do I Get Rid of Carbon Build Up?

I have a dilema.....

I love to ride....i love to ride more than i can tell you all. I have a spinal chord injury that causes me tremendous pain. When I am riding I seem to forget about the pain for a while...no drug...and no lovin can take the pain away for as long as riding is able to. For me it is a lot easier for me to stay in the city.

I can do a lot of short trips 10 -15 good days 30 minutes at a time....then I start to have spasms so I have to stop...before they start.

This is a pain in the *** for highway riding and going any longer distances.

So, according to the dealer...and it makes sense to me....I have carboned up the front cyclinder. A new set of plugs has solved my rough running problem for now, but I assume that the top of the piston and the cylinder are carboned up... maybe more?

My plan to solve this problem is to get on the highway tomorrow for at least 1.5 hrs and really pull back hard on the throttle.

Is there anything else I can do to get rid of the carbon? ....I now know not to let it build up in the first place.

YOU NEED TO FILL UP WITH RACING FUEL AND ADD ONE OUNCE OF HARLEY FUEL ADDITIVE AND RUN IT HARD A WHILE. THE RACING FUEL SHOULD BE ABOUT 115PLUS OCTANE AND WHEN YOU ARE DONE THE PIPES SHOULD BE ASH WHITE.

Mack,

I've always understood that higher octane in a motor that is relatively low compression will cause more carbon due to the delayed burning. Is it the additives in the fuel, or am I just off base about the whole octane thing.

I have my doubts whether you carboned up the front cylinder, but a can of Seafoam can't hurt. All internal combustion engines build up some carbon. If your plugs were fouled you're probably running too rich. Is your bike FI or carb? If carb has it been rejetted?

Try a little Marvel Mystery oil in the fuel and in the oil tank. It will clean things up in no time.

First of all..I think the Stealer thatt told you that, is full of schitt...secondly, if you ARE concerned about it, run some Marvel oil, thirdly,if ts carbed, whens the last time it was checked out for float settings etc ? A good freeway putt at 75mph for 20 miles should clear things out.DONT run Racing Fuel n it..you,ve not the compression for it anyway.

best way to get rid of carbon, heat engine to operating temperature, disconnect a vacume line and add a hose, slowly sip water throught the vacume line. will work better than any snake oil or fuel additive. be careful not to suck too much in or you will hydrolock the motor.

Hi,

I have the fuel injected Twin Cam 88B with the stage 1 aircleaner.

My dealer is telling me that I am not riding the bike as hard as I could be, taking it out of town etc.. What I have done and I did tell my dealer this, is I go for short, highspeed trips of 10-30 miles 1-3 times a week. It seemed odd to me that I would have such a problem. I was also told that I am letting the bike idle too much.

When i stopped in at the dealer yesterday re: fuel additives, I spoke to the guy that worked on my bike and he said that I was letting the motor idle way too much. I told him i didn't think i had let it idle more than anyone else I knew did. HE just shrugged and told me to ride harder.

The engine needs to get up to operating temp and then run that way for a while to reduce carbon build up. That why frequent short trips place a vehicle in the "severe use" maintenance catagory. If you only ride 15-10 minutes at a time, that's not happening.

You say you make a few "high speed" runs every week. Slow down, and don't upshift to 5th. That will get the rpm's to the same range, but extend the time a little.

I second this thought process.........it works...been using it for years on cars and bikes alike. Just be moderate about it.
