Default Stressin' out

Ok, so I'm [sm=deadhorse.gif] a bit, but I just received some older gen Samson BG Street Sweepers that I ordered from a wholesaler/distributor. My first mistake was being blinded by what seemed like such a good deal $wise - stupid me. I talked with a tech rep at Samson and he told me that the pipes have no baffles and will not accept any because of the tip design on the end of the exhaust. I have been talking with a local dyno tuner who I am going to (eventually) have dyno-tune my bike with a PCIII after I have pipes and H/F air cleaner installed. From what I have read, without baffles, I will loose low/mid-range torque and possibly cause damage to the engine, which is the stock 88CID. First, am I correct in this assumption? The Gen3 Samsons apparently have integrated baffles already in them. Second, it makes me sick to think about this, but, should I sell the pipes that I just got and order the Gen3's or is there other solutions to my dilemma? Thanks, a frutsrated fool! [&o]

Yes, you are correct. You need some kind of baffle if you expect it to perform well on the street.

Check catalogs like J&P and Dennis Kirk. There are some universal baffles that might work for you. You could also try the washer & bolt "lollipop" trick; which may help slightly.

The bottom line is, you have the wrong pipes. You can try a few things and make them work. But they will never be the solid performers you'de like them to be. I would return them and get something else. If you can't return them, suck it up and buy another pair. You're going to do that eventually anyway. Might as well save a lot of time, money, and frustration and do it now.

Bob, thanks. I checked both J&P and Dennis Kirk and didn't see anything that looked like it would work. So, the pipes that I just got TODAY are in the classifieds here for sale.[&o]

They may be hard to sell after your initial report on poor performance and engine damage.

Gene, you may be correct. Maybe someone more mechanically inclined than myself can make something work or just want a loud pipe. If all else fails I guess they will be off to Ebay!

The Samson rep told me about torque cones, which I may just try. My whole intent is to slightly improve power and torque and have better sound. I'm not trying to make my bike perform like a crotch-rocket, but I certainly don't want diminished hp/tq. I wish I had done my homework before rather than after my pipe purchase...from what I have read online, torque cones repel pulse waves returning to the engine, and baffles create the needed backpressure. Thanks for your input tripl8.

I wouldn't throw good money after bad; chalk it up to experience. You can sell them on ebay for sure as there are a lot of people who just want noise and could care less about power. You should be able to cover at least half the cost.

I am probably going to sleep on a decision for a few days. Monday I will call the shop that is going to dyon-tune my bike and consult with them about torque cones. If all else fails I guess I will "chalk it up to experience" and send them to ebay. Hopefully, these torque cones will salvage my hopes for the Samson's.
