Not dumb.... Twin Cam engines run very hot & being in TX, and in traffic certainly does not help. They will get that hot and you're not in the danger zone until closer to 300, but you can help it out some with an oil cooler and a "good" synthetic oil (AMSoil, Mobil1, etc.) ~ not to be confused with Syn3....

"Normal" is probably in the 220 ~ 230 range. But, then.... what is normal?

It's been in the upper 90's here in TX and my bike gets extremely hot too, but I seem to be in the same temp range.... I just bought a Green Light Trigger to help me out with several lights that never seem to turn green [:@] So far so good...it was starting to suck and burn sitting at a light for 5minutes....lol

Hello Tpratt,
I am in Texas also and can relate to the heat problem. I heard the main problem is that the additives in any oil (I use Mobil 1, 15-50) will start to burn off somewhere around 260 degrees. You could have brand new oil but the additives could be gone or at least reduced after a good heat event. It's the additives that save your engine in the long run and they are worth protecting. Loose those polymers and you could be running around with only 20W oil. An oil cooler is a good investment. If you're like me and you don't like the way most of the oil coolers mount (or cost) use the engine guard (if you have one) as a heavy duty oil cooler. Your engine will have at least an extra quart of oil to work with and it only costs about $15! The oil circulates through the engine guard slowly due to the large diameter pipe.

Synthetic oil runs noticeabley cooler, too.

Good to hear that green light trigger works for you. I've got 4 of them on my bike and the lights around here still don't change. I'm going to resort to contacting the highway dept and getting them to adjust the sensors. I don't mind spending some time helping them out. That is about the only way to ensure that they work as they are supposed to. In the meantime, I'll just keep doing what I've been doing.... wait for two minutes, then look both ways and go. If they ticket me, I'll be happy to fight it in court. I know one of the ADAs. LOL!

Don't take 75 north at 5pm like I do. My legs are fried. Takes the bike an hour to cool down.
