Default Flywheel help...

Couple of weeks ago on a run a bros motor quit. Roadside trouble shooting found the top of the crank sensor damaged. Pulled the motor yesterday and tore it down. (2006 95" in a Streetglide). End play (left-right movement) is about 1/4 inch.... Large chunks of metal, flattened out laying in the bottom of the left side case. Very thin pieces of metal were inside the main bearing spacer. At a glance I can't see what has failed... I'm WELL versed in twin cam from the crankcase up. First time into a case.
The cam case showed no signs of metal contamination. Cams look fine. Oil pump no scoring. No signs of metal above cam chest (lifters, pushrods, topend, etc). All bearings intact.
Any ideas? I'm in northern VA.

Sounds like the bearing cage let go, how do the rods feel when you rotate them? May want to take the flywheel assembly apart and inspect.

I have the crankcases apart and flywheels out. The bearings are fine. I just spoke with a local indy and he's pretty sure (as I am) the flywheels have shifted.

Comp controls end play in the crank. If it got loose this might explain the huge end play and grinding up everything in sight the wheel could contact.

Just returned from the indy. A washer from the left side crankshaft "came from together". The metal floating around was from the washer. Flywheels are true. I'll just replace the bearings, washers, etc. and have the flywheels welded while I"m at it.

that's exactly what I'm doing...new bearings, welding crank pin, putting motor back to stock so he can sell the bike. Bro bought a new Road Glide while on the run...can't mess with money!

I was incorrect when I stated the problem was related to a washer. The problem was a "apparently) a rod hit the rear cylinder and resulting in a pyramid shaped chunk of the liner breaking off. The missing piece is about 1" on all three sides. The metal in the bottom of the cases was from that chunk.
I was wrong "thinking" the endplay was off 1/4". I've since learned the '03 and later cases with caged bearings have the endplay taken up by torquing the compensator nut. Until now I only had experience with motors with the timken bearings.
