Steve,

I'm glad you posted about your discolored pipes. There have been numerous threads about ECM downloads vs. Power Commander or Race Tuner. Everyone is concerned about the cost of these two items. Harley wants you to believe that their downloads cure all. Actually if you have a stock motor with a stage 1 upgrade they aren't bad but when you do major motor work (like you did) you need to dyno it and get it right (quickly) before you ruin a $300-$900 pair of pipes.

Steve, thanks for the first-hand testimonial. A couple of questions though, first, did the 95" upgrade with cams present any problems as far as your warranty? The dealer closest to home was more than willing to do the 95" heads, jugs, etc. and stated it would have no effect on my warranty. When I asked about cams, I was told that this would void the MoCo warranty. I wonder if that is a dealer to dealer choice or I was getting a line from the service writer.

Secondly, any downside on the mileage? Keeping in mind the urge to "play" from time to time, I was wondering if there was any noticeable reduction in the mileage. I wouldn't mind a few mpg's, but 5-10 might be the deal breaker. Lastly, if you don't mind me asking about the cost. I know the costs can be all over the map, just wondering how long I'll have to budget for the upgrade.

I've priced out a 95" kit thorugh Zippers and here's what I was quoted: "This complete performance package includes precision cylinder boring, forged big bore pistons, Zipper's CNC ported heads with oversize valves, Red Shift cams, adjustable pushrods, and all gaskets. Precision Cylinder Boring from 3-3/4 to 3-7/8 Bore Forged Piston Kit with Rings, Pins & Clips Zippers CNC Ported Heads with Oversize Valves Zippers Step-Lock Guides and Performance Valve Springs Red Shift Cam Set with Chrome-Moly Pushrods Programmed Performance Ignition Module Your Choice of S&S 'G1` Carb Kit w/ThunderJet or Mikuni 45mm Carb with Zipper's High Flow Air Filter Complete Top End and Cam Gasket Set Now available- Custom finishes on the heads and cylinders...The cost on this kit is $2795.00 if you want the S&S carb and $2895.00 if you want the Mikuni carb."

That's without labor and shipping to/from Zippers. Struck me as little pricy. Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

Yow! That's a little pricey especially with no labor included or shipping, most of the HD dealers around here put a 203 or 204 cam in with the stage II kit, you need at the minumum the 203 cam and it does'nt effect the warranty as long as they install them at least around here.

For that kind of money wanted from Zippers you could save a lot more with HD SE parts with labor if you shop around. Do a little more research. I wish you could ride my bike, you would'nt hesitate about the conversion to 95". Gas mileage really is'nt that much different for the performance gain which is a lot. Find more HD dealers in your area and talk to them about prices and components. With Zippers I know your warrany would be voided if you are still under factory warranty, so stick with the SE parts if you have a warranty.

Alot of dealers around here have a 20 percent off deal day every now and then and M&M will give that a lot of the time everyday. Like I said do a little more shopping and looking around since you're not in a hurry. You can also do some searches in the forum, as this has been covered many times on the 95" upgrade.

DGlide04,

I have an 02 SE RK "A" motor rubber mount, it came with the 95" motor from the factory, it is supposed to have 9-1 comp. SE heads, 203 cam, stock throttle body, added Ness big sucker breather backing plate, with 8" K&N filter wide body, I have Rinehart pipes, and PC III, also added the premium SE oil cooler.

Even though it runs very strong now, I plan on having the heads worked this winter with larger valves, port and polish and up the compression to 10.5 to 1, titanium adjustable push rods, jims lifters, jims roller rockers, forged flat top pistons and a 251 cam unless I go with a gear driven cam. Dakota Kid 48 mm throttle body upgrade. Then a complete dyno tune. I would like to get the bike to at least 100 HP. You really don't have to do what I plan on doing but I like to spice things up a bit, but like I said it's a very good running 95" right now as is. I can tell you it's like cable internet -vs- dial up, once you have it you will never go back.

So just do it and enjoy it.

Gary,
When I purchased the bike new, the dealer told me that any upgrades I made at that time would become part of the original equipment list and would be covered under the factory warranty. Since they were all H-D parts and the dealer was installing them, I assume that's why there are no warranty issues. If you purchase and install non-Harley parts, I wouldn't expect Harley to stand behind them.
I don't really know what kind of mileage I was getting with the stock motor because it was barely broken in when I had it done, but the last fill up was 4 gallons after 160 miles, so I'm still getting 40 mpg.
Cost wise it was worth it. The installed price of the SE95 II kit was $1695. I added the pipes, the premium oil cooler, and the adjustable pushrods which brought the total installed price up to about where your kit cost is. Keep in mind that mine has the EFI and did not need a new carb. The H-D dealer added the race tuner to get mine running right. Yours will require that the carb be tuned, so that is a little different. I live in AZ and it is rather hot here which is why I opted for the oil cooler, so if you went with Stage II and pipes only, you should be able to get it done for right around $2000 to $2200.

Hope this helps,
Steve
