Default Dyna Vibration

My wife's 05 Dyna Low rider has a vibration that can be felt in the pegs and the handlebars, that has developed at about 500 miles. She now has 700 miles. The dealear has looked at it. No loose motor mounts, bad tire balance, etc. It increses with speed and continues to vibrate even when the clutch is pulled in and the bike is coasting. She has had mini apes put on it so we realize that some amplicification may occur over stock bars.

The dealer said that they will check it out further when the 1,000 mile check is done and even "tear it down to the frame" if needed. It is not real bad, but not as smooth as when the bike was new.

I am certainly not a Harley mechanic, but have been around stock cars, snowmobiles, etc, in my MUCH younger days. My thoughts were that the vibration is coming from something that is rolling, because it continues when the motor is at idle, coasting down the road at speed. It seems to be the worse at 45 MPH.

Has anyone one else experienced this with an 05 Low Rider?

Thanks in advance for your ideas.

Default RE: Dyna Vibration

Sounds like a wheel out of alignment or balance or a tire ply separating. Find a shop with a high speed balancer and get them to inspect the tires themselves and get the alignment checked as well. When you say that the vibe gets "worse" as you speed up, do you mean that the frequency increases or the intensity or both?

Having spent a good deal of time on helicopters and trying to chase down vibes on them, I know how hard it can be. Other things that are possible are steering and swingarm bearings, shocks and shock mounts, warped wheels (not likely) and a bunch of other little things that you wouldn't think would be a problem and turn out to be a major annoyance.

One more thought, have you taken it in for the first service? Has the drive belt tension been adjusted to account for the initial stretch?

THANKS for the response. No, the 1,000 mile service is due soon. That is
when the dealer wants to really go through the bike for this vibration problem.

I personally am guessing it is in the tire or rim. There were no wheel weights on the tires when the bike was new. I find it hard to belive that it doen's need them.

I have purchased a new Sportster and then a new Softail this year, and had wheel weights on the tires of both.

I am keeping yuour post and will check each item. Thanks again.
