OK When I start my bike for the first time during the day, it starts and idles fine. But when I take off it stumbles and sputters upon exceleration. It will do this for about 3-4 minutes then goes away. I don't need/use the choke to start the bike. It is a '99 Heritage stock carburated evo. Anybody got any ideas. I had to replace the pinion shaft oil pump drive gear about two months ago and may have put the umbrella valves in the wrong spot in the rocker boxes. I think this because I am getting more than usual oil in my open air cleaner ever since. I thought that maybe the problem is due to the oil being sucked into the carb and being burned by the engine but the sputtering only happens after taking off from the bike sitting long enough to cool off before starting again or after the first start of the day and the excess oil only appears after a somewhat long hard ride.
Funny Thing,
This happened to me on my last ride with a virgin motor on its way for a rebuild. Kicked, bucked and made me pull over 3 times. Came up to full temp and all was forgiven. Hmm... Never did that before..... It really isnt a good idea to pull that stunt off a regular basis.
And... I dont why it happened...I put it off to the very cold temp and the fact my bike is a cold blooded b#tch anyways.

Yeah my bike doesn't like the cold either. I was coming home from work one morning and it was like 35 degrees and it ran like that but lately its been in the upper 60's, great weather, and this was different. I replaced my plugs and seems to be running better. After replacing the plugs I rode it for about 5 minutes and the problem went away. But aafter I got home I pulled he new plugs and they were black!, like the old ones. Does anyone think my bike could be running rich? I started the bike the next morning and warmed it up for about 5 minutes and rode it, no problems!?!? This time I turned off my petcock the night before cause someone told me the vacuum operated petcock could be failing causing gas to leak into the cylinders and causing my bike to run bad due to the excess gas, kinda like warming up your bike too long with the choke on, then having to burn off the excess gas.
So I don't know if the plugs fixed it or turning off the gas.
if you start riding without letting it warm up, the cylinders have not grown in length enough to properly compress the base gaskets, is another consideration, and the reason so many evos would come back to the shop for blown base gaskets. just a thought that you might want to consider. make sure that you let her warm up a bit before riding it.
