I am stuck trying to fit a pair of rinehart slip ons to an 09 sporty. The rear goes on easy. The front stops about 1/4in short of the bolt mounts. I have checked that i have got the right mufflers for front and back and lubricated the pipes but no joy. Any ideas?
The front and rear muffler should be identical, if not, the mounting boss is welded in the wrong position.
When the muffler "stops" is it bottoming out or hitting the heat shield? 2009 and newer Sportsters have a redesigned heatshield that is about .500" longer than the previous. If this is the issue, loosen the heatshield completely and try again. You'll probably have to reposition the shield once the muffler is installed, and it is possible that the shield will contact the muffler, eventually gouging the chrome.
its not the heat shield. Looking at it is seems that there is a 'step' in the down pipe extremely small but there doesn't appear to be any way I can get this muffler over it - the tolerances are too tight. The pipes are right for the bike and the year so ....it looks like I have to take the down pipe off an have it turned down a fraction for about a half inch. And when I say a fraction I am talking a finger nail thickness.
If it had been as easy as the back pipe I'd have been riding now and annoying the neighbours....
well I tried spreading the flange but with no joy. Then I tried swapping front to back and they both fit. The instructions say that they are specific assemblies but i can't see how they would be different - so - any reason why I shouldn't just tighten it all up and go ride?
Well I have the explanation. The mufflers sold to me as for an 09 actually are for 01 - 07.
I can't take them back. So, if they fit albeit the 'wrong' way round should I just run them? Is there a material difference between an 07 and an 09 run without the 02s. I will be adjusting the fueling.
