Default New carb on Twin Cam 88: which one????

I'm still stuck! Fat Boy Twin Cam 88 (100% stock): I'd like to add some torque. Any suggestion on which carb should I get? S&S Super E? Mikuni 42? Screaming Eagle? I got friends very happy with S&S, but they run on Evo engines...

Thanks!!!

Have used the 42 mm mik on both Evo and TC. Works great.

Have you tried tweaking the stock carb?I have had some good luck just working with it.If you're set on changing it though, I'd go Mikuni.

I am going with a S/E 44 and will hopefully have it on the bike and dynoed by the 18th. I like the Mikuni product, but I ride around some higher elevations and understand that CV carbs are much more forgiving in that environment. If you get the S/E, make sure you get the "race" version. The one listed in the P / A catalog is the street legal one. Don't know the difference other than the ability to add cruise control to the one in the P/A catalog and the "race" version in the S/E catalog is $20 cheaper. Also, be sure to get the larger intake manifold.

Save your money. The stock CV is very good. It can be tuned to make impressive power levels on bigger engines. I used a stock CV carb on a turbocharged bike for years with excellent results. A new carb will not give you any more power, and will cost a heck of a lot more than a good carb tune.

For more torque, change intake and exhaust. Use the stock air cleaner, and cut holes in the backing plate for more air. Also consider drilling holes in the bottom of the football. Change the exhaust to a good 2-1 system, like Supertrapp. Even a good set of slip ons will make a good improvement; still the best bang for the buck.

You'll end up spending about $800'ish. But the bike will run a lot better. If you decide to add cams or more displacement later, those changes will still work well.

There's NO substitute for airflow. Yes, you can tune a CV carb for good performance, but the problem is it doesn't flow enough air for the twin cam motor. The Motor Compaqny has been using this carb since 1986 on 1100, 1200, 1340, and now twin cams. They advertise the carb to be a 40mm venturi, and in actuality, it measures 38.2 mm. The Mikuni is a true 42mm, and the airflow is much more suitable for twin cam applications. It's the best $330.00 that you will spend on your bike.....period.

I ran both an S&S and a Mikuni 42 on my 96 heritage evo. and the mikuni was easier to tune overall far superior to the S&S.

Check Wally's cycle world or go parts direct, I've seen Mikuni 42's as low as $235 there.I bought my V&H pipes from there for $400.00 to my door in 5 days and no shipping or tax.

my thinking its not just air flow but velocity of air flow...kind of like blowing air with mouth wide open getting warm air then blowing air though a straw....then it depends on how much air you can push thru...you can get a carb with good air flow but then have your exhaust restrick it....cv carbs will handle easly up to90 hp...then it depends on if you stay local or travel...if you travel the cv will be best...if you want to just do 1/4 mile then s&s is the best..
