Default Oil filler cap blown out...

Hi guys,

I drive a 2001 Roadking, which is heavily modified.
The engine is a custom build 124” with Harley, S&S parts and R&R parts:
• Stock Harley Davidson case
• S&S 106-0183 124" hot setup super sidewinder kit
• S&S 640 Gear drive cams and S&S gears
• R&R 17-1001 stage V twin cam cast cylinder heads
• PSI Series 4 production GENESIS "BIG-AIR" carb
• Feuling cam plate
• Feuling super pump
• Feuling lifters
• TP 254-20TC Pro vent rocker boxes
• TP 45-0245-23 Roller rockers
• Engine custom built by R&R cycles (Manchester NH)
It puts out >140HP and >150 lb/ft.

I have an oil pressure gauge attached and it always shows a pressure between 50 (idle) and 70 psi (full throttle).

Because I changed the starter for a heavier model I fitted an oil filler spacer kit.

Now for my question. When I ride it hard I have lost my oil filler cap twice now. It’s a mess!!
Almost a quart oil comes out at full speed on the highway.
Internal pressure blows it out I guess… but what could cause this pressure. Should I be worried??

I can fix it, by securing the filler cap with a screw, but I need to know what causes it.

Thanks very much for any answer you can give me.

Regards,
Michael.

Look back at yesterdays forums, reason for plug blowing is too much crank pressure. You either have clogged breather vents in your heads or cracked rings. These are the most common problems when you are blowing your dipstick.

Default Thanks for the reply

I will do a compression test to see if the rings are broke. This would mean a big loss of pressure wouldn't it?

How much PSI should I expect? More than 180-200 PSI?

This happened to me also. Don't know if securing the cap with a screw would be a good idea. In some past posts people have used incorrect rocker box gaskets blocking or restricting air flow. This has sometimes happened when installing TP boxes on twin cam heads. If it only happens when you get on it, it can't be totally blocked. Removing the banjo bolts & drilling out the center to increase pressure release worked for me. Ran fine after that. Good Luck

How full are you running your oil? How many miles on the build?

Default Additional information

* The R&R heads have big diameter (EVO style) banjo bolts, so drilling isn't needed I guess
* I changed the oil and checked it for metal: nothing there
* I tested compression: cold engine, full throttle give 190 PSI on both cylinders
* My oilfilter is one from K&P Engineering, the oil is redline 20w50
* I fill the case up with 4 quarters
* The build is new and has run for around 1000 miles.

I'm thinking of use this device: http://feulingparts.com/wp/feuling/v...breather-kits/

Any advice or comment would be very nice.

Thanks all and ride safe, but hard :-)

I never put more then 3 1/2 quarts in mine. I have had oil blowing problems with other Harleys i have owned and always run 1/2 qt low. I don't have any problems with them anymore.

Smile Last question.

These photo's I have taken yesterday on my bike. It is dirty, but you can see what it's like:

If have changed oil and filters. Not much debris in the oil... Made the pressure release on the oil filler as you can see in the pictures. Put in 3.5 quart oil and now I ready to ride... I hope.

Next weekend is a run/rally and I hope to put on 1000 miles. I hope everything goes well. I have decide to ride on and check the engine in wintertime. We only have 6 month of reasonable weather and I want to make the most of it :-)

Many thanks for all information and comments.

Please answer one last question:

I have a mechanical pressure gauge, but I think it's not functioning ok.

I have found a readable and semi-affordable digital gauge to use for oil pressure and oil temperature at the same time (I have been looking for that):
http://www.spatechnique.com/product_...page.cfm?cat=2

I know where to put the pressure sensor.

But what is a good spot for the temperature sensor?
I see a plug in the oil reservoir (under the bike) just above the oilplug.
Is this usable? What tread size? The sensor has 1/8npt thread and is about an inch long.

Any comment is welcome.

I had the same problem -- 131 CI motor 06 SG -- I changed the oil and put 4 quarts; before I got 5 miles from home oil everywhere no dipstick -- took it down to 3 1/2 quarts not another problemQUOTE=WIZARD;6723672]Hi guys,

When it was a 88 CID the vent in the head was adequate the 124 CID engine naturally flows much more air through the head vents or it causes pressure build up in the crankcase and the weak link is the did stick so pop. running lower oil makes more room for the pressure to build up but it is still there. I would think with all the cool parts on there that something in the head is restricting the flow of the piston pounding, blow by ,reciprocating mass. it robs horse power to not that you would notice @150. by the way great pictures too.
