2000 FLSTC with yost power tube and thunder slide stalls after a couple minutes after start-up as if it ran the fuel out of the bowl and ther's no more. Have to stay on the throttle in idle just to keep it running...if I let off it dies. How can I diagnose this problem further?
If the bowl isnt filling. U need to check the feed, petcock, screen, float... Figure out why it isnt refueling. Its not the thunderslide, nice kit. Not sure about the yost never used one. if your taking it apart, get a stock needle too.
I don't know if the bowl is filling properly or at the right rate yet. I guess the best way is to disconnect the fuel line from the pingel petcock and check the screen too. If everything looks good there, then I'll check the float. Again, the problem is not with it starting it is with it cutting out after a minute or so with the choke on. Sometimes I can keep it going by using the throttle but once I let off of it the engine sputters and dies. To me it seems as if the cables are not adjusted properly, the idle screw is not correct, or maybe something more inside the stock carb. Are there any quick checks I can do to troubleshoot things so I know where the problem might be. Going to check the filter, petcock, float, cables, and idle screw now if I can get it to run long enough.
have you read any articles about tuning a stock CV? Has the plug for the idle mix been drilled out? raise the idle by turning in the idle screw, top right of carb. if the plug is drilled, run that screw out about 3 turns, then fine tune from there. for cable adjustment, take off your air cleaner and make sure that at full open the slide is fully open. The cables dont seem to be your problem to me. I think you need a good cleaning and check jet sizes and idle settings... find that info and clean it up. Hell why youre at it look for intake manifold leaks too. Maybe just get a can of sea foam to help clean the carb out.
Yes the cap has been drilled so I'll check the screw adjustment. I've read a few CV posts here and there and honestly carbs always confuse me...not what it does but the actual maintenance of one. Show me how to do it once and I'm good forever but tell me to check the jets, etc and I get apprehensive about breaking something. Probably just need to nut up and take a good look at the carb and clean her up. Previous owner did some mods to it and I got it for a steal due to a divorce.
Problem fixed!! Turns out the slow jet was clogged so I replaced it with a 45. The power tube got cleaned as well. Set the air/fuel screw to 2 1/2 turns and she's back to normal. 175 needle into a Yost power tube with a 45 slow jet. The intake has a SE filter and the pipes are V&H short shots.
