I was just going to put this out there and see if anyone else has this problem. I have Zippers maxflow air cleaner, running it exposed and after a few days of riding the airfilter oil slowly ends up flowing to the bottom of the filter leaving the top of my filter dry and turning white and saturating the bottom of it.
I have been taking it off and hanging it on the wall upside down to let the oil flow back to the top which works fine but gets to be a pain always taking off the filter. Maybe I should just put my screaming eagle filter back on that does not require oil
I am not personally aware if they use a K&N air filter on their setup or not; however if it is a K&N filter, than it is not normal for the air filter oil to come off (unless the filter is over oiled; note they only use 1/2 to 1 oz of oil when servicing). There are many companies out there that use our filters for their setups. One way to tell which filter it is is by looking at the mold numbers; K&N filters have the K&N logo molded into the rubber and etched into the metal plate on the top of the filter.
Anyways, as for the oil, if the filter is exposed to the sun, the UV rays will cause the red in the air filter oil to fade, making it look like the air filter oil is wicking down and out of the air filter. As for the oil, chances are there is a bit of blowby from the breather bolts dripping down, going through the filter and dripping down onto the bike. Unless the breather are 100% redirected into the carb/throttle body opening, the engine oil will drip down and out of the bottom of the air filter making it look like air filter oil is draining down and off. And chances are the oil that is going back to the top when you hang the filter upside down is the engine oil that is soaked into the filter spreading out. I personally recommend cleaning the filter with the K&N cleaner and oil to remove any engine oil that may have built up in the filter media. If the K&N filter oil is dripping off and it is not engine oil from the breathers, PM me and I will look more into this with Engineering.
Hey James,
Maybe it could be blowby but I did a clean up of the filter re-oiled a month ago and it still does it. Possibly I've over oiled but it just seems to turn pretty much white at the top after a couple weeks. I think it may be due to my exhaust pipe running right under it (vance and hines sideshots) giving off a lot of heat. Not sure though. The filter is made by Zippers perfomance and is called the Maxflow.
