have another mechanic look it over.....the cam timing must be off somehow.

Yup. Hillside nailed it.

.....when I open the cam chest what do i look for as a indication that the timing is off.
Service manual covers it pretty good.

Your push rods have to be out to pull the plate, but no special tools are needed. You can see if the outer gears are lined up without pulling the plate. One of your cams is pressed in, so if one cam is out of time with the other (very possible here), you will have to deal with that. The 07 and newer cams are much easier to deal with. They are not pressed in.

What about the guy that installed the tensioners? Don't he owe you some rework?
