Default Break In / Problem???

I posted this with another break in question in General HD Chat but thought I might get a better response here. I have 135 miles on my XL1200C. I have noticed that the bike will jerk every now and again while riding. Could there be something wrong with the bike? Or is this normal during the break in period. We have never had a new bike that required a break in. I have been following all recommeded speeds restrictions and varing my speed. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!

Heather, you may just be going too slow for the gear you're in, just a guess.

Man Breaknbad you said it! I was under the impression that they were supposed to pull the primary cover at the 1K but get this - I ordered an M6 Chain adjuster to be installed for my upcoming 1K check and the parts guys told me I would need to order a new gasket - So I went back to the service manager and and asked him and he tells me that they just change the fluids and don't pull the cover. I am no wrench by any means but I know for a fact that if you take your time with only 1k you could pull the cover and reuse the gasket and I thought this was standard proceedure - I have a lot to learn!

Heather I know you will but please let us know what your dealer says - Thanks!

Kess, you don't have to pull the whole cover to adjust the chain. Only the inspection plate which will allow you to adjust the chain.

I would not worry about it, give the bike a chance to stretch. Don't give the shop's any reason to dig into your wallet. I've owned a 74 sporty, 86 sporty and now a 94 FLHTP; each bike needs to get use to you and that only happens with time in the saddle. Alwasy use good gas and keep the oil topped up, but really, your bike will be bulletproof for the first 4 years minimum.

Ok, so I'll hold off until the 1000 mile service and ask about the primary chain. I got the manual out and read some trouble shooting and the primary chain was the only thing that said it would cause the bike to jerk in low speeds. I'll let you all know.

From my very limited experience, the motorcycle runs much differently after 1K miles. I have ridden my friend's 04 1200R when it had 100 miles on it. It ran choppy and rough. After the 1K mile service that thing is a different beast. Much smoother and faster. The engine sounds much healthier. My 05 1200c runs rough as well. The more miles I put on it the smoother it runs and the less choppy. When I used to give it throttle the engine used to shake a lot and accerlation wasn't great. It also had a lot of mechanical noise. Now it's a different story. Much smoother than when I first got it, but still not there.

Like I said, I totally agree with 1200c, in that the bike has to settle out its mechanical hiccups within the first 0 to 1000 miles. Gears, chains, belts, rods, cams, valves and springs need to get used to pulling against the road.

SWEAT IT NOT YOUNG LADY!!!!!!!!!!!!
