Default Cam Defect

Have been modifying motors for some 30 years but this is the very first time I've seen this.

I don't want to give the manufacturers name but check out the top right cam journal. It wasn't milled and polished before leaving the factory. No way it will fit in the inner cam bearing without it. Nice huh?

Was doing a weekend install for a bud, we had to scramble around town to find another set of compatible cams and all we could find were gear drive that cost him more than double. Ouch

Basically, unless they were SEs' they were ultimately ground by Andrews or S&S OOPS!

In defense of the manufacturer, when one handles that type of quantity of product, it is going to happen. Period. The odds stack up too high.
I would also say, that oufit, most certainly would send the cams as needed, once contacted with the problem.
Too bad the chain of events occured as they did.

At least it was a type of defect that could be easily seen.
My luck would have been the hardening process skipped.

I'd have looked for a machinist before I went the geardrive route.
That, or halt the project.

I did Ed but it was on a Saturday....I talked to a Harley Indy Racing shop up the road from me. He didn't have the proper cylinder to hone the journal. Since the owner had to ride back, about 100 miles, we had to do what was necessary.

The stock cams would have worked for him too but it was totally his decision, stock or wait for a replacement or go for the gear drive that was available for his stock heads. Was a mucked up weekend but he is a happy camper now.
