i have a 1990 softail custom with a stock L grind camshaft. I have a andrews ev27 that i was going to install but i have heard that its not worth upgrading as the stock L grind is very similar to the ev27. So what im asking for is your opinions if i should put in the ev27 or keep the L grind in there?
Depends what you want...The L has no overlap..very smooth running cam..The 27 has a much nicer idle, however they can be noisy ..tic tic tic..As far as power I doubt you would see much difference.I have changed 3 cams in a weekend to decide which one I liked best..half the fun is working on them....
I absolutely love the EV27. I had it in my 91 FLHS and that thing pulled wheelies!! I had some 9.8/1 heads on it too so as mentioned, a little increase in compression does help. It is a fast ramp grind so it can be noisy so I highly recommend you use your stock cam gear instead of Andrews. If your stock cam gear is worn then have a machinist measure the Andrews gear and find out what color code matches it then buy a crank gear to match it. Andrews says they have a color code red gear but I just did my neighbors bike and it was too tight so I measured it and it was a color code black!! Now he has to buy a different crank gear! If you get the gears matched correctly it won't be loud, mine wasn't. Enjoy it, it makes a really flat torque curve and even gets good mileage!!
I fitted an EV27 into my stock 1990. The only other mods were SE air filter, Crane ignition module and spiked mufflers. A significant and worthwhile improvement. Rode it that way for several years until I decided I wanted even more! You could simply fit it and try it. If you like it, the mods Scott suggested will make it even better! You won't be disappointed.

Reason: Spelling!
I ended up putting the ev27 in. I milled the heads myself .04 with a .03 head gasket and sunk the pushrods in .140. .....i'm curious to see how it performs compared to my 01 scout!
Should be a great improvement for you.
You can actually remove another .040" (.080" total) from the head, with the .030" gasket, and you'll like it even more.
I was being conservative with my .065" suggestion.
