Default road king engine falters

i have an 05 road king with 7000+ miles on it. it is the carburetor model (i figure i can work on a carb, but not an injector.) the exhaust is stock. i have an on going problem with the engine faltering when i open the throttle. i have actually dropped the bike on the crash bar more than once at parking lot speeds when making slow turns and needing power. the engine would just die and over i would go. this weekend while riding in mid 50's temp it would occasional falter when accelerated at interstate speeds. my old 76 superglide was carburated and had the harley cough sometimes when the throttle was opened but never to this extent. are these new carbs just so lean that i have to put up with this, or is there a cure? i know you have to run the choke a lot longer on this bike than anything i have owned before. did i just screw up not getting the fuel injected model?

If your bike is completly stock I would say it shipped from HD very lean to meet emission standards. I would pull a spark plug and you will see how white the porcelin is. If you check over on the Sportster forum you will read how they battle the carb farts on their bikes. There is a lot of info out there to richen idle mixture and increase slow and main jet sizes. I wouldn't say you made a mistake to get a carb bike but it needs a little help (like all Harleys) to get to run right.

Hows the oil consumption? The '05's and early '06's have a known valve seal issue. Is it possible you are fouling the plugs? This could cause it to miss at lower RPM's. Just a thought.

Before messing with changing jets, get the fuel mixture adjusted correctly! I am sure this site has the how to info, if not it is at www.harley-performance.com
Need to pull metal plug off top of adjustment screw (located under carb). Turn it all the way in, not hard just till it seats, and back out 2 1/8 - 2 1/4 turns. That seems to be the sweet spot for TC's. With a little finese, you can unhook the idle and throttle cabels at carb, and just rotate carb to get at it without having to take the carb off.
