Loudness
Loudness is truly subjective. Going to HD dealership today and I'll keep an ear out for the sound I'm looking for.
Just looking for a low rumble rather than a ,"Hey! Here I am! Look at me!"
type of noise...and definately something more substancial than a prison fart.
I'm aware of the saying "Volume saves lives", but until exhausts point toward the cars that cut us off, I'll have to rely on bright lights, horns, and reflexes.
now should I go with a black Fat Bob or an orange one?
... but, that said, how much difference there is between 84dB and 90dB at one's ear in the saddle might not be that noticeable ....
Another thing to consider is how much difference there is in volume at 3000 RPM vice 1000 RPM (or at or about idle speed) ... I reamed out a stock muffler that didn't sound too bad at idle ... but, when I was 'on it' ... it was ear-splitting .... I couldn't take it anymore and had to get rid of it ....
Since then, I installed a big bore kit and SE heads ... so, now at the same RPM, it is loafing when it used to be under a strain ... which makes a difference is sound output ....
A few additional considerations ....
