Default Loudness

Hi, Gang.
This is only my second post because I am going through the process of selling my Triumphs ('01 Sprint & '72 Trident) and giving HD a try for a while, so please bare with me.
Thank you to everyone posting pipe sounds on various sites.
Does anyone have db level #'s for stock, SE, and V&H short shots with Quiet baffles?
Sorry to be such a pain, but the wife and i don't like to have a bike that's too loud. I'd like a little bit of a growl to the bike ('11 Fat Bob) without going over the top and being obtrusive. The Trident's exhaust was perfect.
Thank you in advance for any insights and advice,
Rudy

No db reading but regarding VH short shots with quiet baffles, they area not what you are looking for since you do not want a bike that is "too loud". Those baffles do very little in terms of lowering db. I tried them.

I recommend looking at 2n1's. Deeper tone, roughly between the stock and 2n2 straight pipes in terms of loudness, and you can feel the performance improvement. Also go hang out at a hd dealership and listen to bikes and check out their pipes.

since you want to stay away from Loud -- pass on the following Thunderheader, Rinehart with the regular baffle same for D&D -- I like the Vance and Hines pro pipe--if its to loud for you -- change to the quiet baffle

I had V&H Sideshots and they were kinda loud, I put in the BCT QQ's and it helped some but it was still a little louder than I wanted. I went to the SuperTrapp Supermeg and it was too quiet so I put in the open cap and it's just right now. It only takes a few minutes to change it either way.

The amount of exhaust sound for a given exhaust can vary considerably. This is due to whether baffles are inserted; which baffles are being used; engine size, cam, etc.; and last, any custom modifications made to the exhaust by the owner if any.

Also, one can not categorize a certain type of exhaust such as dual, non-dual, 2 into 1; or brand as loud or quiet.

Loudness is totally subjective. What I think as quiet, you may think is too loud. For that reason getting testimony off the forum isn't your answer. The best advice I can give you is to drop by your local HD dealer on a weekend and hang around outside. You may hear a set of exhausts that will work with your model bike. Go to a local "bike night" and do the same thing. Once you hear a set you like, you should also talk to the owner/rider just to make sure of exactly what he has...brand and baffle, etc.

Good luck and hope you find what you're looking for.

Jim

Loudness is "subjective" but have you ever heard of a shortshot being quiet? By the time you baffle them down you kill what power you got in the first place.

Save yourself a lot of time...start going to bike nights, poker runs--anywhere bikers congregate--and when you hear a bike you like, ask the owner what pipes he has. Not only will you be happier with your choice, you might meet some new riding buddies.

You can also find out what pipes you DONT want, too. :-)

I put Short Shots on my wife's 1200 Sporty and neither I nor my wife believe it is too loud. They do have the V&H "quieter" baffles installed.

Like I said......"quiet" is subjective.

Meaning, there is NO answer that is definitively correct. That includes yours, mine and everyone elses.

The OP listed three pipes for comparison:

"stock, SE, and V&H short shots with Quiet baffles"

The vh 2n2's are loud. With or without q baffles. Been their, done that. They do sound good though...

My cell phone has a decibel meter app and I'll measure my old Sideshots the next time my brother comes over, they're on his bike now, my other brother has V&H Bigshots on his Fatboy and V&H Slipons on his Heritage, I know for a fact those pipes are LOUD!! But I'll use the meter to verify it for the ones who can't hear too well..
