Default Running rich

Hello I have a problem and having a brain fart. I have a 1990 and I got the carb tuned up to some new pipes last year. I basically run it right off back fire.. Kind of on the lean side. But the problem is, my pipes are turning gold and when I check my plugs, they have soot on them (black), to me means signs of richness. It'll run hot hot then I'll give it more gas. Sounds to me I need something done with my jets. My question is bigger or smaller. Thanks for reading..

What. Your running rich and still a backfire? That would be an exhaust gasket leak.

No. I guess I didn't explain it right. I leaned it till it backfired, then riched till it stopped backfiring. Then it ran very hot and made a little more rich to get the temp down. It doesn't backfire now, just runs rich. And if I lean it anymore it'll run hot and backfire.

Are the plugs wet or dry? If wet, have you considered the possibility
that it ran hot enough to cook the valve seals?

Not wet. And when I say hot it oil temp was never above 230 and it runs good. Just gold pipes and soot on plugs.

Timing is right. I think its like a turn and a half out now. But this summer is turn it like 8ths out till the temp went down.

Back firing through the exhaust indicates rich, not lean (coughing through the carb indicates lean). Black 'soot' on the plugs also indicates rich condition.

Pipes turning gold and/or blue close to the cylinder heads (where they get the hottest) is normal. Most people cover that part of the pipes with heat shields.
