Default Which cams?

I would appreciate anyone's (everyone's) advice on which new gear drive cams to put into my 06 Softail Deuce.

I don't want to worry about these danged cam chain tensioners anymore - well, that's a good excuse anyway. So - gear drive cams!

At this point, I've done Stage 1 (K&N RK-3909 a/c, PCB-III USB, V&H Pro Pipe), and other than the cams, I'm not planning any more hop-up work AT THIS TIME. I may go the big-bore/porting route sometime in the future (would NOT expect to go high-compression, maybe a small bump at most), but I'm willing to accept that that may - probably will - mean another cam change at that time. (Obviously, not having to do so is even better, but probably not realistic...?)

The bike has a great power-band - not as much oomph up top as I'd like, but is there ever? I don't want to lose torque in the low and middle ranges. Ideally, a little more there, plus some more on top - yeah, I want it all!

I ride solo and two-up, back roads and highways - all types of riding.

Three cams I've heard good things about that SEEM to fit the bill are Andrews 26G and 31G, and S&S's 510G. Open to all suggestions, however!

Anybody got any advice?

I appreciate it, folks. - BrianK

Default RE: Which cams?

Of those three.....

The 26 is a great all around cam, espically for motors with little other mods and 9.3:1 or less compression ratio.
The 510's will make a bit more power power at higher RPM than the 26's, but like 9.7:1 CR.
THe 31's are a lot like 37's, but like 10:1 CR.

Given your stated goals and ride style, the 26's are probably the best bet, at least of those three.

Another option, very similar to the 26, but with slightly more potential (espically in a light bike, like a Deuce) would be the HeadQuarters HQ-0034.

I'm sure others will have plenty of additional input nad opinions....

I just put in the S&S 510Gs last week and i'm happy with them. I went that route for the GMR 98" build and head work next fall. I know i lost a little bottom end for now but when it's done it'll all be good, i hope. HTH

Thanks folks. Sounds like, of the three I had in mind, the 26s are the way to go. I'll keep looking at others as well, but it's good to at least be crossing SOME off the list.

I'm going to add that yes i lost a little bottom end but i'm still on the download for the Screaming Eagle 203 cams that were in there. I really like the HP gain on the top end since most of my riding is on the highway. My PCIII should be here tomorrow (friday) and i'm hoping for some more gains. Once i get the GMR 98" kit and the heads done (Big Boyz) i think it's going to **** and Git!
