White smoke and overheating; any chance you have water in the oil? If you shine a flashlight in the oil tank, does it look normal color or is it a milky tan color?
As was suggested, compression and leak down test are in order. You will know more than you know now after the test, until then, you are pissing in the wind.
to tell u guys the truth..it was the harley co here where they tested it and told me its the fi doing the problem and on the scanner no errors what so ever?!@#!!???..they didnt even do a compression test on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i pulled the engine apart today and found oil on the top of the pistons and the pistons were really black on the sides too ..dont know what that means the black on sides of the pistons!!!but i think its not good..i love working on my harley and have alittle experience in mechanics..lol little as i said.. and the rings are breaking when removing from the pistons..they have to be flexible right???? and the piston doesn't have any gaps or is playing around in the cylinders ..does that mean i can send them and polish them and put new rings or do i have to break through them?? its std by the way standard size!!! and concerning the valves i didnt get to them yet..ill keep u guys informed on what will happen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!thnks so much guys!!really i needed the help..u guys rock!!!!!!!!!!!
The OP sounds like a first timer; the "black on the sides" of the pistons could be the fatory coating. It's the oil on top of the pistons and broken rings that are the problem. Definitely time for an over bore and new pistons and rework the heads; guides/guide seals could be bad. However, it would be important to know why the oil and why the broken rings? IIRC, the bike only has 29K miles on it.
Something isn't right about the OPs previous posts; don't think we are getting the whole story.
i bought this bike like this with its problem...ive been riding it like this for 3 yrs..i bought it from Austin TX and i heard that its pretty hot up there. my friend lives up there and shipped it down to me ....we never knew i had this problem as my friend has no experience..anyways i forgot to say that the front piston seemed to have more oil then the back one..i was amazed and was expecting the opposite ...it never had an oil cooler..and i added one when i first got it.i was suspecting that tx is hot ..dunnoo and yes 27k on it

But!!! you have to know if the cyl is worn. Take the Jugs to a machine shop and ask them to measure for wear. If they are stock dia this clean up pistons and install new rings. Look at the heads and check the valve stems for oil/carbon. My local shop charges $50 per head for cleaning, valve job including installing new guides and seals if needed. If the heads are the issue replacing rings will just put you back where you started. If heads look clean (in the exhaust and intake ports) then I'd re ring and do a compression test. If in normal range then I'd ride the hell out of it.
Oil could be from bad valve guide seals. Piston/cylinders/rings might be fine but you won't know without a compression and/or leakdown test which you should have done before you tore into the engine.
Now that the heads and cylindersa are off, take the pistons and cylinders to a dealer or an independent shop that has torque plates and dial bore guages to check piston to cylinder fitment. It tolerances are in spec, as the previous poster suggests, have the cylinder lightly honed, install new rings and put it back together. IIRC, piston to cylinder fitment with OEM hardware is .0006"-.0015".
hi guys!!!!!!!!!!!!! i took the cylanders to a machine shop and he had to do a over bore and put original hd pistons 0.10.. and a valve job too as there was carbon built up on them and the fuel valve had small eaten holes,he had to sand them down to close them ..i put it all together with my mechanic( a friend who has Harleys and more experience then me) started her up and its great.. no smoke thank God !!!!!!!!!!but there is a small noise no ideal u can here it better if u put ur ear close to the 2 cylinders and the noise goes: louk louk louk ..everyone was telling me that its normal cuz the motor is hard and new and the rings have to break through with the cylinders ..is that true guys?????????????????
