Unhappy Stripped Timimg Hole

Sadly, I just foungd out that the threads in the timimg hole on my 1973 FLH Shovelhead are stripped. What is the best way to solve this problem without removing and dissaembling themotor? Has anyone tried the Colony Oversize Timing PLUG J&P Part: 432-364?

Thanks

Bugger....I think most of the methods of thread repair require you to retap the hole for the insert. I use TimeSerts and even though they are pricey are awesome - you can ring around and some shops will do a timesert repair for you.

I think even helicoils need a thread to grip onto.

Is it a normal thread or a NPT one? I'm not not sure as I'm only using an Early EVO as an example.

If you are really good with hand tools you could use an end tap to cut new threads without pulling the cases apart. It's not easy to do! Just remember the tap will touch the L/H flywheel during the process and some debris may get into the bottom end. Has the timing hole already been tapped out?

If you do this put a lot of grease on the tap as it may catch the metal and keep it from falling in to the motor..Go slow..

Along with a light coating of grease on the tap, I hooked up a regulated air line in place of the rocker box oil pressure gauge on my 1974 XLCH. Ran about 10lbs of pressure when I re-tapped the timing hole over sized. Worked fine. Go slow, have lots of light and watch what you are doing. If you are careful you can do it.

Just an idea but don't they make clear plastic ones? I'd think that being plastic that you could clean threads in case as good as possible and motivate it to screw into the hole, and could leave that way since you can see through it for timing mark. Again its just an idea, don't bash me too hard.

That Colony # should work, as that is what it is designed for.
