Default Help woth 1340 softail prob please

Hi guys,
Imhave a 98 softail custom, with Mikuni 42 carb. After a few months of non ise, I have had it out over the last few days, but it seems to have a fuelling problem. All os fine at low revs, but when the throttle is fully opened the engine dies, stops firing for a few seconds and then comes back to life. The problem is more frequent in higher gears. Also the engine seems to lack power at thentop end. Have checked plugs and filter, and it ran beautifully when I last used it a few months ago. Any suggestions very welcome as to the cause please.

Thx

Tim

Only a suggestion, but you may need to remove your carb, and have a good look inside to insure all is functioning correctly.

This might sound crazy but my '95 was doing same thing & it turned out to be the battery. Had a dead cell, which caused the bike to "chug" like it was running ouy of fuel. When you test the battery, do a load test on it.

Disassemble your carb (including the jets, accelerator pump and float) and use compressed air to blow out ever orifice.

If you're not sure of how to set the float have someone set it for you.

If you haven't replaced the spark plugs recently you should do that first.

A weak battery is a possibility as is a loose ground cable (check at battery and frame).

Carb bowl dried out, ethanol crap now stuck in main jet and emulsion tube. As above, clean it well.

I agree... carb clean and dump your gas, flush your tank and put in fresh. May need to check and clean your pepcock screen as well. Good luck
