Has anybody heard of a replace ment exhaust system that would help reduse or deflect the heat away from the right leg?
I under stand that just about any change in the exhaust requires some type of retune to the computer system. I am ok with that I just didn't want to spend a lot [1000 or better] to get mt 09 heartiage softail so i could ride in 90 degree heat.
Another ? Whats the best way to get the mufflers loose from the pipes on my stock exhaust without or min damage. The rear pipe is mis aligned with the exhaust port so i was goin to take it apart and put in new exhaust gaskets and flange clips. I think that rear pipe is leaking right at the conection where the pipe hits the gasket. From a cold start up [75 degrees] my heat gun reads 480 to 500 degrees within just a few seconds after start. the same area on the front cyl measures about 75-100 degrees cooler. Thanks for any help on this.

Hi Ron and welcome to HDF from the UK. The heat problem you suffer from is a consequence of the factory meeting the latest exhaust emissions regulations and Harley has no choice but to do that. I am sure they would like to solve the heat issue as well!
The best solution is the one you don't like, which amounts to retuning your electronics to improve the air/fuel ratio, which will cool your bike down and reduce exhaust heat. If you change your exhaust (and I don't think there is a good solution out there) you will have to retune the electronics as well.
So you are caught in a trap I'm afraid! If you have any plans to tune your bike, such as a stage 1, then bring them forward if you can, get saving, and do it all as a single package.
Thanks for the replay I live near Cincinnati Ohio so hter is 5-6 dealers wihtin 30 miles of me. I have gotten a different solution from everone I talk to. One part of this I don't quite understand is why all of the solutions I have heard include useing SYN. oil
Most people say its worth a 10 degree drop in operating temp. Well I am at about 500 degrees at the rear cyl exhaust pipe flange so I am looking for something to get rid of 200 degrees! Besides the owners manual calls for useing a CI 4 or CJ 4 oil spec.
Now that makes sence to me cause I know that Desiel engines are about as hard on oil as u can get. I just wonder why the Dealers push the SYN over what the Factory recomends? Profit I guess? Anyway U say if I change the pipe make sure it is a design that moves that rear pipe forward like the Vance and Hines Patr # 75 105 4 ? My main concern would be to do the right modes to allow some comfort in 90 degree heat and also make sure the engine has a long life.

Harley makes heat-shields for the rear cylinder heat issue But it doesn't show up online. Your local dealer should be able to get these... MID-FRAME AIR DEFLECTOR #29200008 for 2008 and later models except Rocker's. Put them on the wife's 08 Heritage and she loves em. Makes getting the seat on and off a bit tougher though since the forward mount uses some of the space for the seat tongue.
Hi Ron, I use synth in my S&S motor, but only because that is what is recommended. As you can see in my signature, I have other bikes and use dyno oil in them. I don't see synth as any part of the solution! Scott has given a better suggestion for an economic and quick fix, to improve your comfort. I believe there is an aftermarket brand of heat deflectors as well.
