Default Installing New Slip-ons

I have the new slip-ons sitting in the living room and while I won't be able to get to them for a week or two, I thought I'd ask for some tips, tricks, and help in advance. Over the years I've read and heard many different tips, but that's when I was young, and now that I'm old I've forgotten most of it. Here's some basic questions for installing on a '12 SG.

1) Is it really necessary to remove the heat shields?

2) I recall not that long ago someone indicated that you use new clamps (supplied) and that the clamps are positioned a certain way to help facilitate a good seal. Yes? If so, how should they be positioned?

3) I've heard over and over again to tighten things slowly by doing each fastner a bit at a time.

4) I recently heard something about high temp silicone during install? Huh?

5) I have a cheesy torque wrench. Is this a good time/excuse to go buy a decent one, or can you just be smart about torquing the mounts/clamps?

Anything else I should be aware of?

might loosen up heat sheilds on end, so you can tuck the stuff under there.
no need remove.

rest: you are overthinking it, just do it & dont worry about it.

FWIW, i use the clamps twice, and after that, they are not really good.
so if yours come with new, i would use them.

IDK #2 #3 #4

no on #5 you will know how tight is good. if they slip back when you accelrate, adjust the nut behind the handlebars.

it's all good. i know what it is like to WAIT to see your bike again.

Mike,

Most of your queries relate to fitting a complete system, not just slip-ons. You may have to loosen the heat shields, to get access to the muffler clamps. If your new mufflers come with clamps then use them! I position them so I can't see the clamping bolt. You don't need a torque wrench, unless you don't trust yourself to judge a handful of non-critical fasteners.

It will take you no longer to do this than we have all spent writing about it!
